Frequency distributions for <br />each variable were calculated and then selected variables were collapsed into new variables. Age, education, <br />and housing variables were collapsed and analyzed as new variables. Age was collapsed into athree-category <br />variable (18-34, 35-54, and SS+years). Education yielded four new categories, High School or less, Some <br />post-high school education, Four-year degree, Some/Completed post-graduate education. Housing responses <br />were split into either "renter" or "owner." In regression analysis, the age and education variables were <br />collapsed into dichotomous variables. Age was split into young (18-34) and older (35+), and education was <br />split into college degree (Bachelor+) and less education. <br />• The two social connectivity variables that ranged from "1=Strongly Agree" to "6=Strongly Disagree" were <br />grouped to create new dichotomous agree/disagree variables. Responses ranging from "1=Strongly Agree" to <br />" 3=Somewhat Agree" were labeled as "agree", while responses ranging from "4=Somewhat Disagree" to <br />"6=Strongly Disagree" were labeled as "disagree." The new variables were used in Chi-Square analysis to <br />determine significant associations and in logistic regression analysis to identify variables that predict <br />connectivity in the community. <br />Additionally, the threat variables were collapsed into new variables. The threat variables that ranged from <br />"1=Strongly Agree" to "6=Strongly Disagree" were grouped to create three new variables. Responses of "1= <br />Strongly Agree" and " 2=Agree" were regarded as "high threat." Responses of " 3=Somewhat Agree" and <br />"4=Somewhat Disagree" were labeled "some threat." Finally, responses of "S=Disagree" and "6=Strongly <br />Disagree" were labeled "low threat."
