The Minnesota Waste Management Act gives the following order <br />of preference: <br />• Waste reduction and reuse =best <br />• Recycling <br />• Composting of yard waste and food waste <br />• Resource recovery through composting or incineration <br />• Land filling that captures methane gas for energy production <br />• Land filling that does not capture methane gas for energy production =worst <br />Where Should Our Trash Go? <br />• There are potential hazards associated with ALL means of municipal solid waste <br />disposal, including recycling and composting <br />• Today's landfills must meet stringent federal safety guidelines <br />• Land for landfills is expensive and getting hard to find <br />Where Should Our Trash Go? <br />• Refuse derived fuel provides much more energy than landfill gas <br />• 280 tons to power one home for 20 years vs. 750 tons in a landfill <br />• Landfills are owned by large hauling companies: internal cost advantage <br />• • Resource recovery plants charge same tipping fee to all companies, large or small <br /> <br />
