1 <br />.. ~ ~ •^ I <br />.. <br />FACILITIES AND PROGRAM <br />The Education Sciences Building (the former <br />Mineral Resources Research Center) will <br />be occupied by three College of Education <br />and Human Development (CEHD) units: the <br />Department of Educational Psychology, the <br />Center for Applied Research in Educational <br />Improvement (CARE/); and the Center for Early <br />Education and Development (GEED). These units <br />attract $8 to $9 million annually in sponsored <br />research <br />• `CEHD has trained more than 100 superin- <br />tendents and nearly 700 principals and other <br />K-12 administrators in the state. <br />• Nearly 40 percent of the Teacher of the Year <br />-Award recipients in Minnesota are University of <br />Minnesota alumni. <br />• The renovated building will. provide space for <br />continuing education-for thousands.of teachers, <br />administrators, and other professionals who <br />work with CEHD faculty on reading education, <br />disability services, and classroom technology- <br />solving real problems in real schools. <br />The opportunity for professors, researchers and <br />graduate students to work in close proximity <br />.will enable them to conduct integrated <br />research projects,. attract additional sponsored <br />funding, and enhance research that.will benefit <br />Minnesota's school children, teachers, and <br />administrators. <br />• Student and faculty interaction would increase by <br />bringing them together in one space rather than <br />the six spaces they currently occupy. <br />A recent facility assessment of the renovated <br />building concluded that it is structurally sound <br />and well suited for adaptive ,reuse. <br /> ,.~, ~~ _~ ,gtt~ ter„ <br />~<~ <br />~ <br /> ~ <br /> <br />'~~ <br />~t ~~ <br />- ~ <br />~ <br />. <br />, ,, <br />~~~ ~~~~ <br />~~xx.~~ . _~. <br />_ <br />-- - - ~~~ <br />• The openness and large volume of the existing <br />interior space allows cost-effective conversion to <br />..new use. <br />• The renovated building would hold 40-50 faculty <br />and 80-100 researchers and graduate students. <br />.REQUEST <br />$13.3 million + $6.7 million University contribution <br />PROTECT SCOPE <br />Funds will be used to design, renovate, furnish, <br />and equip-the Education Sciences Building (the <br />former Mineral Resources Research Center).
