Land and Water Resources Inventory
The land and water resources inventory is a summary of information provided in the
Capital Region Watershed District Plan and the Rice Creek Watershed District Plan.
Climate and Precipitation
The climate of the City of Falcon Heights is similar to the overall Seven County
Metropolitan Area. The climate consists of fairly short summers with an average
temperature of 70 degrees F, and snowfall covers much of the ground from late fall to
early spring, with an average winter temperature of 17 degrees F. Average annual
precipitation is 28.32 inches, including approximately 46 inches of snowfall.
30-year average temperature and precipitation for the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport
Weather Station are summarized in Table 3, below. Data obtained within the CRWD
Plan are available from the University of Minnesota - St. Paul Campus Weather Station
and the Office of the State Climatologist.
•
Table 4, on the following page, illustrates the probability of a rainfall event occurring in
any given year. The recurrence interval is a measure of the probability of occurrence of
the storm event. For example, a rainfall event of 5.9 inches has a 1 % probability of
occurring in any given year which is expressed as once in every 100 years, the 3.6-inch •
rainfall event has a 20% probability of occurring in any given year, which is expressed as
once in every five years.
Table 3 -Minneapolis-St. Paul Weather (30 Year Record) Average Temperature
and Precipitation
'i'enu erature Preci nation in
Janua 12.2 0.95
Februa 18.2 0.88
March 31.0 1.94
A ril 46.4 2.42
Ma 58.5 3.39
June 68.2 4.05
Jul 73.6 3.53
Au st 70.5 3.62
S tember 60.5 2.72
October 48.8 2.19
November 33.1 1.55
December 17.9 1.08

Year/Mean 44.8 28.32
•
Falcon Heights Comprehensive Plan 2008 Draft -January, 2008 Part III: Infrastructure, Page III-26
