•
Parks and Recreation Commission
Minutes
August 11, 2003
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chair Long at 7:05 PM.
Commissioners Daykin, Deen, Dolan, Evans, Long and Council Liaison Kuettel
were present. Bill Maertz, Staff Liaison, was absent with prior notice.
Approval of Agenda: Deen moved, and Evans seconded the motion to approve the
agenda, as presented. The motion was unanimously approved.
Approval of the Minutes for July 14, 2003: Dolan moved, and Daykin seconded
the motion to approve the minutes, as presented. The motion was unanimously
approved.
Trolley Path Task Force: Commissioner Deen will represent the Parks and
• Recreation Commission on this task force. The first meeting is scheduled for
Monday, August 25, at 7 PM. She has a conflict with that date and Chair Long
will attend. The Commissioners feel the interested residents from the public
meeting will be willing to serve on this task force. As of this meeting, 12 of the 18
letters have been returned. The final 6 residents will be contacted by city staff.
The University of Minnesota will sign off for approval of the grant once all
residents have responded. For informational purposes, one resident tallied 120
people using the path during a 3 hour watch.
Playground Equipment Replacement at Community The Commissioners
reviewed some of the playground equipment choices for Community Park. Our
recommendations will have to be reviewed by Staff Liaison Maertz, who can then
give the commission additional information to make a final selection. Questions:
What are the dimensions of the area? Who will do the prep, City staff or
installers? Does the funding include the costs of preparing the site and installation
or just the cost of the equipment? The Commissioners were in agreement that the
site be wheelchair accessible, and that the Commission should solicit funds from
the Falcon Heights/Lauderdale Lions and possibly the business community. The
first choice (without having any of the above questions answered) was the
Schooner, which would benefit larger and/or separate groups of children, is large
• enough for adults and/or babysitters to reach children, and has several different
types of activities.
