The Curtiss Field
Park pond .improvements
were discussed once
again at the' Falcon
Heights City Council
meeting Jan. 28.
There will be no more
puddling in the park,
thanks, in part, to the
Minnesota Department of
Transportation. Falcon
Heights was awardecT a
maximum of $54,000
from ~ MaDOT for
drainage improvements
to the park's infiltration
pond.
According to MaDO'T's
Cooperative Agreement
•Engineer Michael Kowski,
'30 candidates submitted
'proposals to the Munici-
pal Agreement Program
for 2005 projects. Falcon
• Heights 'was selected and
allotted the maximum
amount. The money can
only be used oa pond
construction and°items'in
•accordaace with the
improvements. •
Bill Maertz, director of
Parks and Public Works,
noted in a memo that "as
a condition of the Munic-
ipal Agreement Program,
it is the responsibility of
Falcon Heights to develoi
a complete set of plan;
and specifications for tlz:
project, as weIl as acquirE
any right of way neede~
to construct the job." The plans for the
'~mprovemeats were finalized
in.2003. ~ ~ ..
In order to retain 'the grant
money, the project must be
-started by June 30, 2005.
Following the presentation
? of the grant money, Maertz
outlined the 2003 Parks and'
Recreation accomplishments
in Falcon Heights. Number
one was the completion of
r the plans for the Curtiss
improvements. .
The second highlight on
:the list was the reduction of
water flow to Curtiss Field
by 72~ percent. Falcon
Heights worked with the
Capital Region Watershed
and Southeast corner devel-
opers Sherman and Associ-
ates to reduce runoff to•the
°~,park. One means of aecom-
. ~ ~ pushing this was by provid-
• ia~ more. ground.'around the
~; new development to absorb
water.
