Minutes <br />City of Falcon Heights <br />Parks and Recreation Commission <br />April 8, 1996, 7:00 p.m. <br />Members Present: Greg Schaefer, Carol Weisberg, Carol Kriegler (Parks Director), <br />Laura Kuettel (Council Liaison). <br />Absent: Steve Schugel, Nancy Wickhem. <br />1. Minutes of the 3/25/96 meeting were distributed. <br />2. 1996 summer recreation program brochure was reviewed and discussed. <br />Falcon Heights Elementary School will not charge us for gym rental for Open Gym. <br />The Lions Club has contributed $228 to help support Open Gym. We will offer °High <br />Five open gym four days per week for 90 minute sessions. It will be user friendly, with <br />no registration or fee payment required. It will operate as a "drop-in" neighborhood <br />program for kids in grades 4 and up. <br />New offerings include All Sorts of Sports and Away for the Day Club, designed for <br />children in grades 4 and up. In addition, there will be activities in Grove Park four days <br />a week. <br />The brochure will be distributed through the schools on Wednesday of this week. <br />3. Park clean-up day will be Saturday, April 20, from 9:00 a.m.-noon. Friends and <br />neighbors are being encouraged to help clean up their neighborhood park. At least <br />one commission member will be at each park (Grove Park, Curtiss Field, Community <br />Park) to provide leadership, serve refreshments, and thank participants. Carol Kriegler <br />will make up a "to do" list for each park. The City will provide trash bags, shovel, and <br />recycling bins. The Lion's Club will be helping out at Community Park. <br />4. UNITREE tree and shrub planing project will take place on Saturday, May 4. <br />The City received a grant of $6,000 to fund this. project. We will be planting 26 trees <br />and 62 shrubs. There will be a 30 minute educational component at Community Park <br />at 8:30 a.m. after which volunteers will go to their respective sites to begin planting. <br />Three trees will be planted at Curtis Field, and the remainder will be planted at <br />Community Park. <br />We plan to recruit about 30 volunteers for this project. Several scout troops have been <br />contacted as well as the Falcon Heights/Lauderdale Lions Club. Members of the <br />community are being encouraged to participate. Commission members will participate <br />at both parks. <br />5. The Community Playroom will close for the season on April 12. We need to <br />decide whether to offer evening hours again next year.
