Meeting Date: 6/12/95
Agenda Item: D - 1
CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS
PARRS AND RECREATION CONII~SISSION
ITEM DESCRIPTION: Falcon Heights School Site Improvement
Schematic Plan
SUBMITTED BY: Carol Kriegler, Parks and Recreation Department
EXPLANATION/SUMMARY: A Falcon Heights school site improvement
committee has met on numerous occasions over the past school
year in an attempt to establish a schematic plan for improving
the school site. Following is a summary of the proposed
improvements.
A. Excavating and Turf Establishment.
This would include bringing in materials on the east side of the
school site to eliminate the drop in grade in the area east of
the existing northeast ballfield. This would allow for an
easterly shift of both ballfields with no net loss in open space
between the fields. The city's engineer has advised us that
there appears to be sufficient room to push both ballfields to
the east approximately 60 feet. This would allow the existing
drainage Swale on the east edge of the grounds to remain as it
is. While it would be possible to attain the desired grade by
re-grading the site, staff has been strongly cautioned about the
challenges of re-establishing turf on a school site. Regrading
of the entire field had been favored as it would have provided
for an opportunity to eliminate ruts and voids in the field and
improve the general grade. The adjustment to the east will
result in a gain of space on the west side of the grounds that
would be improved with play equipment and miscellaneous site
amenities. It would also increase the distance between the east
play area and northeast ballfield.
B. Infield Construction.
With the shift in location of the ballfields, it would be
necessary to construct two new infields and replace (or
re-install) the baseball backstops.
C. Hardcourt Construction.
A quality hardcourt is recommended for the area just north of
the new east parking lot. The hardcourt would be approximately
40' x 70'. Color coated with boundary lines and keys, and
include both standard and junior height basketball standards.
D. Play Equipment. Designed with the intent of serving
children 10 years and older, play equipment would be located on
the east side of the school grounds.
