"!r. Clarence :-chiller presented two applications for variance, ore for <br />his food market at 1579 N. ~?aniline, anc one for 1~~r. t~bert ~'lombera's <br />drug store at 153 1;, Hemline. The variance requests are ''or si~-ns which <br />will ~o the full width of each store and. extend ~,,n the side walls. The <br />signs are t.o he ~ feet high, However, the six -€~#, hei~~ht, t;- actually +he <br />height of the plastic backing for the three foot. high. letters, The Plan- <br />ning Commission felt that the six foot plastic backin<~ for the letters <br />will act, as a facing to the builc~in~; and that. only the space devoted <br />to the letters would constitute the "si?n" area. <br />At 1579 "d. ran•1ine, the area of the proposed iet.t.ers equals ~~4 =q•~~are <br />feet (3'x ~4' plus 3' x 24'. The 4~e' is the front width, and thF 2~k' <br />is the side extension width). <br />At 1583 1. ;lamline, the area of the proposed. let.t.ers equals lf~'; square <br />feet (3' x 44'plus 3' x 1~'). <br />The Planning Commission felt that the si~,ns were attractively ~?esi~;ned <br />and their sizes were justifiable. <br />I:OTICN Schwantes moved, seconded by Larsen, that the Flar;nin- Com- <br />mission recomfiend to the 'illa~e ';ouncil that they approve <br />both applications for variance on siJn size, provi~ed that. <br />i~x. Black offered to ^~nt.act thee; about. it , <br />3. A'ir. Larsen said that he felt that the ordinance restrictions on signs should <br />be revised. The rest of the members agreed that, the present. restrict.i.ons are <br />very limiting, and decided to make the following recommendations to <br />the Council: <br />that Mr. Dahlgren or someone else at 1~:idwest Flannin.;~~ be cor- <br />tacted for advice on what is currently acceptable practice <br />in other municipalities with rei-ard to signs, and <br />that a survey of existing sif;ns in the `lilla~e be made as a <br />~-.uide to ~i~~e direction in the drawing up of new specifications <br />for signs. <br />~.
