Meeting Date: 8/11/93
Agenda Item: P 1
CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION
ITEM DESCRIPTION: Community Park Prairie Planting
SUBMITTED BY: Carol Kriegler, Parks Recreation Director
REVIEWED BY:
EXPLANATION /SUMMARY:
As a part of the Cleveland Avenue project, larger wetlands
emerged to collect storm drainage along the west side of
Community Park. The adjacent areas are graded with gradual
slopes and are scheduled for wetland and prairie seeding this
fall.
Brian Malzer, Falcon Heights resident and boy scout, has proposed
a prairie seedling planting service project at the Community Park
for his Eagle Scout project. He proposed to organize and manage
his fellow scouts and interested members of the community in a
prairie planting of about 3,000 seedlings this fall
(approximately October 1st).
A seedling plant is consistent with long range goal of
establishing a Community park wildflower prairie. The planting
of seedlings is considered very desirable and beneficial because
it will significantly accelerate prairie establishment. Jyneen
Thatcher, Parks and Recreation commission member and landscape
architect, is experienced in prairie seedling plantings and is
willing to assist in the management of this project.
The anticipated cost of the seedlings for this project is about
$1,500. If the seedling planting project were to be contracted
out for services, the total cost of the project would be nearly
doubled.
ACTION REQUESTED: Approve proposed prairie seedling project and
expenditure of $1,500 to purchase seedlings out of Community Park
landscaping funds.
