A
DATE: February 14, 1994
TO: City Council of Falcon Heights
FROM: Solid Waste Commission of Falcon Heights
RE: Citywide Garage Sale
The Falcon Heights Solid Waste Commission recommends a citywide
Garage and Sidewalk Sale to take place on Saturday, May 21, 1994,
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Commission feels that one of its goals is to increase the
community's recycling of what was once considered "trash." Garage
sales are the ultimate in recycling, as well as a great way to
bring the community together for a positive event.
St. Anthony Park and Bryn Mawr in Minneapolis have found their
community -wide garage sales great fun, without major problems,
for both local businesses and residents.
As in Bryn Mawr, Falcon Heights' businesses could host discounted
sidewalk sales that would attract buyers from the area and
elsewhere. At -home garage sales could generate income and help
"recycle" useful items for our city's residents, increasing
awareness of Falcon Heights while generating less traffic than
the State Fair!
This being the first year of the Garage Sale, the Commission
feels it is best to keep things simple. A logbook and two boxes,
one containing Official Falcon Heights Garage Sale Blue Balloons
(OFHGSBBs) and the other containing a page of rules and safety
guidelines, will be offered in the lobby of the Falcon Heights
Community Center /City Hall starting April 15.
A resident or business owner would need to come down by Friday,
May 13, to place their name and address into a logbook and to
take a set of guidelines and an OFHGSBB that marks them as a
participant. The Solid Waste Commisssion will then generate 100
locator maps. These will be available the day of the sale from a
box outside City Hall and at a few willing local businesses.
The involvement of City staff should be minimal. The Police Dept.
will be informed ahead of time.
A budget of $125 is recommended, to cover OFHGSBBs; locator map
and guideline copies; and classified ads in Star Tribune and
Pioneer Press to run the day of the sale, as well as the week of
the sale in both the Focus and Roseville Review.
