HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION
Minutes from February 8th 1994
Commissioners Present; Dave Bowers, John Treadwell
Commissioners Absent; Ed Sheppard, Gwen Willems, Ted Johnson
Guests; Sue Gehrz
The meeting was called to-order at 7:OOPM
Business:
1. The minutes from the January 18th meeting were approved, and no changes were made.
2. Ideas, pros and cons, and discussion on Commission name change was tabled until
more commissioners could be present.
3. John would like to obtain a list of local businesses and other groups that may be
interested in receive mailings from the H.R.C. The League is encouraging having our own
list of mailings.
4. Dave presented two drafts from Gwen Willems. The first draft was for a brochure for
the HRC concerning the ADA, outlining some ideas that we may wish to incorporate into
the final brochure. The second draft was concerning a letter to the City Council for the
expenditure of HRC budgeted funds for the attendance to the International Conference in
New Brunswick, Canada in June of 1994. Gwen received support form the other
commissioners present and our Council representative Sue Gehrz for the sum of 100.00
dollars to help defray the cost of the conference.
5. Discussion was held concerning the publishing of commissioners phone numbers in the
brochure. It was felt that the City Hall number and or the Chairpersons number should be
the only ones listed.
6. Dave will ask Susan Hoyt about the advertisements concerning new commission
members and the recruitment of a student member.
7. Discussion took place on the training for mediation and no fault for the commissioners.
It was thought that for the amount of cases that may present themselves at this time, it may
be more advantages for the City to hire a mediation service when a case presents itself. It
was felt that the commissioners time would be better spent in other community areas.
However, there are several commissioners that have an interest in this area and would like
to pursue that interest on their own. Sue Gehrz will bring this topic up before the City
Council to obtain their ideas on this subject. There is the possibility that we could share
mediation and no -fault services with the Commissions from the surrounding communities.
Dave will look into this for our next meeting.
8. It was felt that we should be proactive in our Non violent resolution training. John and
Gwen may be interested in obtaining information on this topic from other sources to find
out if and where there is training for this. Sue Gehrz is willing to help with training
