Meeting Date: 3/9/94 Agenda Item: C 3 CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION ITEM DESCRIPTION: Awarding contract for tree removal and tree trimming for 1994 SUBMITTED BY: Linda Treeful, City Forester REVIEWED BY: Susan Hoyt, City Administrator EXPLANATION /SUMMARY: The city prides itself in its protection and replenishing of its tree resource. In order to do this, an annual maintenance, removal and planting program is part of the annual budget. The city's annual tree removal and tree trimming budget is $12,000. The actual dollars spent depends upon the number of city trees that require removal due to disease and storm damage. The city's tree trimming program covers a specific area of the city. In 1993 the city spent $9,957 for tree trimming and tree removal. For 1994, the city requested cost proposals from tree firms for the 1994 tree removal and tree trimming program. Five firms responded to the tree trimming proposal and three responded to the tree removal proposal. The cost for tree removal for 1994 cannot be determined at this time, the costs for removal are based upon last year's removal requirements. The staff recommends that the city contract with S S tree services for 1994 for the following three reasons: 1. The city receives better service for tree removal, especially in storm situations where workloads can't be scheduled in advance when it works with the same firm for both tree trimming and tree removal. Therefore, hiring a firm that does both types of work is desirable. 2. The estimated cost of the work by S S is comparable to the next bidder (Twin City Tree) considered by the city and it may well turn out the same as the next bidder, if different size trees are removed since the cost of removal varies on the size of the tree. 3. The tree trimming firm must have demonstrated an ability to trim and remove trees to meet the city forester's standards, which are designed to keep the city's trees as healthy as possible for as long as possible. S S has been very respectful of this city resource and cooperative with the city forester.
