To: Falcon Heights Planning Commission 11/28/94 <br /> From: Jim and Sue Colten, 1760 Tatum St. <br /> Subject: Parking on Tatum Street <br /> We are unable to attend today's Planning Commission meeting so we are writing <br /> to express our support for changes in the parking restrictions on Tatum St. <br /> In the past year we have seen a large increase in the amount of all day <br /> parking in the middle portion of Tatum St. We believe that this change is <br /> related to dramatic increases in the cost of parking at the University of <br /> Minnesota and can be expected to continue. <br /> Tatum Street is not wide enough for two sided parking. As evidence of this, <br /> we offer the following recollection of the time when Tatum Street was <br /> considered a candidate for Municipal State Aid funding. At that time we were <br /> informed of mimimum widths for MSA streets if parking was allowed on one side <br /> or on two sides of the street. The current width of Tatum Street is much less <br /> than the minimum for two sided parking. We believe that safety is the reason <br /> that these minimums are imposed. <br /> Tatum Street carries significant traffic that is not related to residential <br /> use. This is partially due to business use in the area near to the <br /> Tatum /Larpenteur intersection. It is also due to the fact that Tatum Street <br /> is a convenient bypass of traffic bottlenecks on Fairview. <br /> Tatum Street also carries significant pedestrian and bicycle traffic due to <br /> its proximity to the University of Minnesota. <br /> Lastly, the long, straight and well paved nature of Tatum Street encourages <br /> relatively high speed automobile traffic. <br /> All of these factors lead us to the conclusion that concentrated clusters of <br /> two sided parking are a hazard and should be discouraged by new parking <br /> regulations. <br /> We support any measures that will achieve such an objective. <br /> 0 1 <br />
