Meeting Date: 1/25/95 <br /> Agenda Item: P 2 <br /> CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS <br /> REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION <br /> ITEM DESCRIPTION: Authorization for staff to apply for the <br /> Small Business Administration (SBA), Minnesota Department of <br /> Natural Resources Tree Planting Grant FFY 1995 <br /> SUBMITTED BY: Linda Treeful, City Forester <br /> Carol Kriegler, Park and Recreation Director <br /> REVIEWED BY: Susan Hoyt, City Administrator <br /> EXPLANATION /SUMMARY: The purpose of the Minnesota Department <br /> of Natural Resources Division of Forestry SBA tree planting <br /> program is to expand opportunities for small businesses to plant <br /> trees on lands owned or controlled by state or local government. <br /> The city staff would like to submit a grant application for funds <br /> to assist planting trees in the city parks. Most of the proposed <br /> tree plantings were specified in landscape plans for the parks <br /> and would have been planted by contractors over a number of years <br /> due to budget limitations. Some are proposed specifically for <br /> reasons of privacy or energy conservation /shading of play areas <br /> or sidewalks. Many of the planting sites will require special <br /> preparations. The project would involve planting approximately <br /> five trees at Curtiss Field, five trees at the Grove Park, and 24 <br /> trees at the Community Park around the park building. The grant <br /> application would be for approximately $5,000 with the total <br /> project cost at $10,000. <br /> The 50% matching part of the grant would be provided by the Parks <br /> budget for landscaping materials (35 and in kind contributions <br /> of administrative time and tree care /maintenance (watering and <br /> pruning) over three years (15 <br /> Trees would be planted either in Fall, 1995 or Spring, 1996. <br /> ACTION REQUESTED: Authorize application for the Small Business <br /> Administration, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Tree <br /> Planting Grant FFY 1995 <br />
