Environment Commission
Meeting Minutes
July 11, 2011
Present: Brian Goodspeed, Diane Ross, Gretel Keene, Justin Miller
Absent: Peter Lindstrom, Ethan Wagner, Nina Semmelroth, Rebecca Montgomery, Stan Sveen
Guests: Roger Aiken
1. Minutes of the May 9th meeting were reviewed with no suggested changes.
2. Aiken presented his ideas on teaching classes to Falcon Heights residents on various
energy and environmental causes. He currently teaches such classes through his
involvement in the Center for Renewable Energy, Education and Demonstration (CREED).
Classes would vary from energy basics to mathematics to energy policy. The commission
asked Aiken to provide course outlines to Miller for further discussion at a future meeting.
3. Miller presented the GreenStep Cities award that the city recently received for achieving
step two status in the GreenStep Cities program. The commission reviewed the current
status of projects and provided input.
4. An update of the groups that have agreed to staff tables at the Ice Cream Social were
presented. Since there will already be an environmental presence at the event, the
commission decided against staffing their own table.
5. Goodspeed inquired about what measures were being taken to educate residents about
keeping yard clippings out of the streets. Miller discussed the various education tools that
the city provides. Ross asked about signs that used to be at various houses throughout the
community, and Miller said he would follow up.
The meeting adjourned at 7:25 pm.
