City of Falcon Heights, Park and Recreation Commission Meeting
June 14, 2011

1. Meeting called to order 6:32 PM
2. Approval of Minutes May 9, 2011
Minutes were not sent. Tesser will send before
the July meeting.
3. Commonwealth Terrace Cooperative (CTC) U of M joint partnership with Falcon Heights Parks and Recreation
Tesser is working with Janet Risinger at CTC to start
several new programs at their CTC location. According to the 2010 census, 175 kids reside at CTC. Tesser worked with the League and the city’s insurance carrier to draw up the agreement
between the city and CTC regarding liability. There will be soccer twice a week for 6 weeks and a Sunday Fun Day Sports Spectacular (4 weeks, varies sports with parents and kids).
Programs start July 11th. The cost will cover staff pay.
4. Summer Events Update
Movie in the Park event
The Source Comics and Games donated $511.00 to our Movie in the Park
event. Staff obtained licensing for the movie Megamind through swank.com. The cost was $300.00. Staff is renting the movie equipment from AVVR.
Rental costs for the screen and speakers are $211.00. A vendor will be selling popcorn and beverages at no cost to the city.
Ice Cream Social
The jumping castle and the band have
been reserved. Cookies have been ordered. Tesser asked for commission volunteers for ticket sales. Lonetta and Melissa are willing to volunteer. Matt is a maybe. Lonetta and Melissa
asked for a laminated cheat sheet for ticket sales and bundled tickets for an easy transaction.
5k Family Fun Run/Walk
Tesser is currently looking for FH businesses to provided money
for t-shirts. The race this year is August 13th. A tshirt design contest is going on through mid July.
5. Tennis Court, USTA grant update
Construction bids were received on
April 26th. The lowest bid was $90k for tennis reconstruct, $140k for tennis court and light poles. Staff decided the not proceed in adding light poles to the project because of the
added $50k cost. Staff received $3,200 from local adopt a court by USTA. Staff submitted the design proposal and plans with construction bid amounts to USTA national for the completion
of the grant process. Staff is currently waiting for approval from USTA national on the grant amount. Staff should know next week if the grant will be approved.
Once the grant is
approved, the next step will be to get approval from the council. Then the bid contractor will be selected. In July, the Parks Commission will see the tennis court plans. August
8th would be the construction start date.
6. Staff Report:
Registration Update
Allie Davitt, the new Summer Program Coordinator gave a brief introduction of herself and also discussed
a little bit about how programs were going the first week.
Fall Programming Update
Fall soccer is a going again this year.
Fall tennis is unknown at this time because of the awaiting
tennis grant.
The Lauderdale location is a possibility.
Touch football is a possibility as a new pilot program this year for ages 5-7.
Cheer America was contacted in regards to having a new program. They have a program in Roseville and unfortunately have not shown interest in having the location at Falcon Heights.

Sidewalk cemet panel replacement and boulevard replacement grass.
7. New Business
Commission
members asked Pittman to fix the swing chains that were tied together and also to put sand in the sandbox.
