Item Opposing the Proposed Constitutional Marriage Amendment Description Recently, Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth passed resolutions against the proposed constitutional marriage amendment. The Human Rights Commission reviewed those cities resolutions and unanimously agreed to put forth to the council a similar resolution for the City Council to review. Budget Impact None Attachment(s) Resolution 12-06 Action(s) Requested Human Rights Commission recommends that the Falcon Heights City Council approve the attached Opposing Proposed Constitutional Marriage Amendment Resolution 12-06. Meeting Date April 11, 2012 Agenda Item Consent F3 Attachment Resolution 12-06 Submitted By Michelle Tesser, Assistant to the City Administrator CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS COUNCIL RESOLUTION April 11, 2012 No. 12-06 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL MARRIAGE AMENDMENT CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS WHEREAS, in 2011 the Minnesota State Legislature voted to include the following question on the election ballot in November 2012: “Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide that only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage of Minnesota?”; and, WHEREAS, the proposed amendment would add a new Section 13 to the Minnesota Constitution stating: “Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota.”; and, WHEREAS, the Falcon Heights City Council recognized the importance of equality for all citizens by passing the Domestic Partnership Registry in 2011; and, WHEREAS, a broad coalition of organizations, community and business leaders, faith, labor, progressive and nonpartisan organizations; communities of color; and current and former elected officials have all joined to defeat this amendment.
