Meeting Minutes DRAFT
October 8, 2012
Present: Commissioners Diane Ross, Peggy Hall, Isaac Mielke, Rebecca
Montgomery, Mayor Peter Lindstrom, Deb Jones (Staff).
Absent: Brian Goodspeed, Jeff Connell, Nina Semmelroth, Ethan Wagner
1. The meeting was called to order in the conference room at 6:30. The minutes for
July, August and September were approved.
2. Beekeeping Ordinance. Commissioners went over the draft put together by
staff. The draft is based on the model ordinance from the Minnesota Hobby
Beekeepers Association with additions from the City of Minneapolis ordinance.
Changes and corrections were made. Commissioner Montgomery moved, Ross
seconded, to send the ordinance draft to the City Council. The vote was 3 in
favor, 1 opposed.
3. Recycling Innovation Grants. Staff liaison Jones asked for ideas we could use to
apply for one of the County’s recycling innovation grants. She will be meeting
with Jean Buckley from Ramsey County and Jim Bownik from Lauderdale
because it has been suggested we might do a joint project with Lauderdale.
Commissioners offered a list of ideas, including public education on organics
recycling, partnership with CTV on composting, a mattress recycling program
(similar to Duluth), a community restaurant, and some kind of outreach to
businesses.
4. Sustainability Workshops. Mayor Lindstrom provided information about the
upcoming sustainability workshops. The students will help each community
develop an action plan. It is not necessary to attend both workshops.
5. Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at about 8:15 p.m. Chickens will be the
main topic of the next meeting.
