HomeMy WebLinkAboutEnvironmental Commission Meeting Minutes_April2018 Falcon Heights Environment Commission April 9th, 2018 6:30 p.m. Meeting Minutes Present: Chair Wassenberg, Secretary Olson, Liaison Moretto, Mayor Lindstrom, and Commissioners: Holmes. 1) Approval of Minutes- Tabled 2) News and Announcements  Bulbs and aerators will be given out at the Kids Stuff Sale. 3) Eagle Scout Project – Zane Johnson Zane Johnson gave a presentation on his planned Eagle Scout Project to build a rain garden at the zero lot in Falcon Heights. This lot is City-owned and is undevelopable due to deep utilities, but may be a good candidate for a garden. Zane is proposing a pollinator friendly garden that would be neonicotinoid-free and fed by local stormwater runoff. He has volunteers ready and the support of local neighbors. Motion was passed to recommend the project to the City Council for approval. 4) Presentation Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) – Ramy Selim Ramy Selim from MREA gave a presentation about Solar Twin Cities. Solar Twin Cities is a group purchasing program that helps make solar installations more affordable by taking advantage of the economies of scale (bulk buying). They work to get help get a group purchase of solar and installer contractor on board. The community ultimately gets to vote (not MREA) on who will be the contractor. There will be events around the cities called “Power Hours” to inform interested citizens who might then decided to participate. MREA asked if Falcon Heights would like to be a promotional partner. City would receive (at the Megawatt Promoter level):  City Logo on Posters  Logo on program website  Resources on display at events  5 mentions on MREA’s social media (15,000 contacts)  2 relevant/approved promotional posts  MREA Business Membership Motion was passed to recommend that the City promote this opportunity. The City should provide:  Use of Logo  Letter of Support on official letterhead  15 social media posts for the program and events  Poster Placement at City Hall 5) Spring Event- Holmes Patti Holmes provided the Commission updates on the upcoming Sustainable Actions Fair. A volunteer opportunities signup sheet was passed around. There will be an upcoming building inspection. Contingency location will be at City Hall. Adjournment: Meeting was adjourned at 7:56 PM.
