Council Minutes
May 8, 2002
Mayor Gehrz opened the meeting at 7 p.m.
PRESENT: Gehrz, Kuettel, Lamb, Lindstrom. Also present was Bill Maertz, Parks/Public Works Director, and Pat Phillips, Deputy Clerk
ABSENT: Talbot, Worthington
COMMUNITY FORUM: There was no one present wishing to speak.
MINUTES: The minutes of April 24, 2002, were approved as written.
CONSENT:
Councilmember Kuettel made a motion to approve the following consent agenda. The motion passed unanimously.
General disbursements and payroll.
Redefine Lindig Mini Park as a “Recreational Surface Use and Underground Storm Sewer Utility” for purposes of the Ramsey County Use Deed on the property.
POLICY:
Establishment of a Friends of the Parks Fund
Parks and Public Works Director Maertz said council is being asked to approve the establishment of a “Friends of the Parks Fund”. Maertz said the Park and Recreation Commission was
interested in creating a means to help people include Falcon Heights parks in their planned giving so this fund will assure that people who want to contribute have a tool available to
them.
Maertz said donations will be held in an interest bearing account and will be used only for park and recreation purposes. Donations are tax deductible for federal and state tax purposes
but donors are advised to consult with their personal tax advisor, Maertz stated. Councilmember
Lamb moved to approve the establishment of a Friends of the Parks Fund. The motion passed unanimously. Councilmember Lamb suggested this information be put on the city’s website and
in the city newsletter. Mayor Gehrz suggested a kick off be held at the Ice Cream Social on July 25.
Appointment of Commissioners to Solid Waste Commission
Mayor Gehrz said seven people have applied to the recently reactivated Solid Waste Commission. Gehrz recommends appointment of the following residents: Susan Harding, Lois Millett,
Barbara Leary, Frank Meah, Jeff Alexander, Michael Barany and James Kielsmeier.
Gehrz recommends they be appointed to three year terms commencing with the meeting in June, 2002. Councilmember Lindstrom made a motion to approve the appointment of the above residents.
The motion passed unanimously. Lindstrom suggested a survey be taken of all residents to see how satisfied they are with the current trash hauling/recycling system.

UPDATE
Parks and Public Works Director Maertz told council that the installation of the picnic shelter by the tot lot at Community Park has been moving along. The footings and columns are
completed and the roof should be delivered and installed by the end of May. Maertz said a mini-groundbreaking ceremony will be held sometime in June. Maertz thanked the Falcon Heights/Lauderdale
Lions Club again for their generous donation towards the purchase of this shelter.
Maertz said the summer recreation programs are filling up and encouraged residents to sign up as soon as possible. Maertz said they had a record number of qualified young people apply
for summer coaching positions. Maertz said the Saturday morning Open Gym at Falcon Heights School has been very successful this past winter with over 500 people in total using the gym.
REPORTS FROM COUNCILMEMBERS
Councilmember Lindstrom thanked the Falcon Heights/Lauderdale Lions Club and the newly appointed Solid Waste Commission for their volunteerism.
Councilmember Kuettel said a thank you note to city hall was received from the AARP Tax Aid volunteers for allowing them to use the city hall facilities again. Over 300 people were
helped with tax preparation this past tax season.
Mayor Gehrz announced that some funding for the redevelopment of the southeast orner of Snelling and Larpenteur had been granted to the developer by Met Council and MN Housing Finance
Agency. There will be another community meeting held in June and residents and businesses will be notifed of the exact date.
