APPROVAL OF MINUTES: 1. Approval of October 7, 2019 minutes. Eischen 1st Motion Carlson 2nd Motion Motion Passed E. AGENDA: 1. Grants a. Good Neighbor Grant • Good Neighbor grant will be used for Rec on the Go administration and material fees. Rec on the Go will offer evening sessions during summer 2020. • Some of the funds were used to purchase a shed for Rec on the Go. The shed is now at Curtiss Field. • GNG will also be used for Story Time. This event is still being planned but there will be more details to come. Council Member Melanie Leehy briefed the commission on the scope of Story Time. Story Time has the purpose of getting kids together with volunteers to read at one of our City events. The book that will be read will provide a foundation for discussion and exploration of topics. b. Target • $690 remains from the Target soccer grant. Commission members were asked to brainstorm ideas for the use of the remaining funds. • Commission member Mike Bradbury had recommended a sport court. After looking into the cost and installation of a sport court it was decided that the funds would not cover this idea. This idea could be explored in the future with additional grant funding. • Other ideas that were brought up by commission members included; offering a field trip to Allianz field for those signed up in our soccer programs, scholarship for a 2nd child in a family, or even partnering with the U of M soccer team. 2. Updates a. Curtiss Field Ice Rink • Public works has been flooding the rinks at Curtiss Field. With the warm weather the rink conditions have not been skateable. The weather looks to stay cold so rinks should be open within the next couple of weeks. Rink attendants have been hired for the season. b. Staffing and Summer Program Guide • There will be a variety of new summer programs offered in 2020. Programs range from science, cooking and a variety of art classes. These programs will be contracted through third parties but will still be held in the Falcon Heights Community. • Commission members also brought up other programs that should be offered to the community such as babysitting classes, parks safety, sports safety, job skills course and CPR classes. Staff liaison will look into these options. • Commission member Ryan Carlson shared that he works for an engineering company and that there might be other STEM funding available for organizations similar to ours. Commission member Carlson will look into this through his day job and report back to us. c. Community Park Building • Inspection will take place at the Community Park building Spring 2020 to assess the work that needs to be done. d. Curtiss Field – Half Basketball Court • Curtiss Field basketball court is expected to be built Spring/Summer 2020. 3. Weather Cancellation Policy • Commission members reviewed cancellation policy for programming. Once this policy is approved and changes have been made, the policy will be sent to all parents/guardians that have youth enrolled in Falcon Heights programming. • Only change that has to be made to the cancellation policy is in reference to the outdoor rink section. It should be mentioned that during extreme cold, wind chill warning issued by the National Weather service will result in closing of warming house. F. INFORMATION/ANNOUNCEMENT - New website coming January • New website will be launched January 21st. Commission members were asked to think about webpages that should be included on the new site that are not on the current site. - Community Garden Workshop • A gardening workshop will be held on March 18th at 6:30PM at City Hall. The workshop will talk about vegetable gardening. All are welcome. - Ice Cream Social 2020 • Ice Cream social planning will start during the next parks commission meeting. Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department will not be hosting Hot Dog with a Deputy in conjunction to the Ice Cream social this year. - Spring Together 2020 • Parks commission will be at the Spring together event to promote the summer programming. It will be a good opportunity for the commission to talk about programming and to assist the community with sign-ups. G. ADJOURNMENT: 7:56PM Dunlap 1st Motion Carlson 2nd Motion Motion Passed
