Falcon Heights- Community Engagement Commission
June 27, 2017

Minutes
1. Call to Order: 7:00pm Georgiana moves, Stacey seconds
There was an idea for Human Rights Day, the movie “Sold” on human trafficking
for a documentary and topic. There is a big initiative going on right now with the
Super Bowl around the corner.
2. Approval of May 15, 2017 Minutes Stacey moves, Katie seconds, approved
3. Task Force Inclusion Recommendations
At the Community Conversation there were groups that began to form around these
recommendations, but that was more to gather emails for where people’s interest lies.
The Community Engagement Commission’s task is to look for the recommendations
that can be immediately implemented. The recommendations were 100% adopted. In
the short term, certain structures do not exist yet. What recommendations seemed
interesting and something that was feasible to do within our range?
In regards to “use what we have”, the Commission could add to the Human Rights Day
event to begin accomplishing some of these recommendations. We can promote and
collaborate with some of these groups mentioned to put together presentations. Also, a
partnership model and leveraging those partnerships is of interest. If there are residents
already interested in some of the topics, we can begin to collaborate with those groups
or people.
In regards to youth mentorship, there are some programs already happening that we
could promote and support. It’s of great interest to consider programs available to
youth for internships, and to learn more about the programs that are currently
operating. Roseville Area High Schools should be reached out to. There is a nearby non-
profit that does after school tutoring, career development, and skills development.
A program through AmeriCorps has reached out to the City Administrator about
potential for getting involved. It’s a ten month apprentice program. All of the
recruitment is done by the Public Allies Program. They are on-site working for four
days and one day they have supervised training and leadership.
The University also has opportunities with students who are working to complete
real-life projects for school. That could be a partnership that would also tie in with
career development.
The Science Museum did an exhibit on the science of Race and Ethnicity. They have
offered corporate trainings on those issues: race, ethnicity, and implicit bias. Make
contacts and find out how we can make use of that right away.
There is a lot of interest in the Community Conversations and maybe continuing one
of those with having a presentation from one of these resources mentioned in the
recommendations.
Recommendations:
Have city reach out for partnerships- Science Museum, etc.
Sustain and expand city trainings- but open that up to residents as well to sign
up and be a part of the conversation.
Include statements of community values in the New Resident Info Packet
How can we talk about the values of the community and the commissions?
Maybe create a separate mailing on this topic and highlight these points? Maybe
a separate bullet point on the “Welcome” postcard on where to view the cities
values and how to highlight those.
Highlight the community values on the website and the home page.
Add to the Welcome Packet and make references to additional documents on
values, resources, etc. Incorporate these into all city documents. Rebranding city
website and materials to include the values.
If the values are posted, there needs to be accountability in following through
with these recommendations.
There currently aren’t many crosspoints where paths are crossing to get to know
one another. What are some resources that could be included in the new resident
guide to assist residents with “having courageous conversations to know where
to turn for help with neighbor disputes.”
The CEC can be involved by making resources available. Block parties could
distribute those resources.
Promote who their neighborhood liaisons are, how to get in contact, and how to
become a liaison.
Ask the Task Force to be present at the ICS. Work on getting people engaged
who aren’t at the table.
Have a calendar for target dates on when we want to be holding more
educational opportunities
Feedback on liking the code corner, and maybe making an e-news corner specific
to the actions being taken on the recommendations. Make an “inclusion piece”.
Make the city calendar larger on the website and highlight events
Human Rights Day is on Sunday, December 10. Look into great promotion, more
resources, and partnerships.
TOP PRIORITIES OF WHAT CAN BE DONE NOW: (High impact, low effort)
TOPICS:
Education and Training
Science Museum- schedule a date
City offers implicit bias- broaden life in FH
Workshops on FH resources- legal rights of renters vs. landlords, bring these
workshops to the community
