Item Appointment of Ryan Carlson to the Falcon Heights Volunteer Fire Department Description Ryan Carlson submitted an application to the Fire Department because of his interest in public safety. Fire Department personnel have reviewed his application and interviewed Ryan. The Department would recommend the appointment of Ryan Carlson. Ryan will have two years to complete the necessary training and education before he will be an official volunteer firefighter. Note: Ryan currently serves on the Park and Recreation Commission. Bio Originally from Wisconsin, I feel in love with the Twin Cities while studying Aerospace Engineering at the University of Minnesota. The Cities have a rich history, vibrant multi-cultural events, major sports teams, and incredible seasons. After a difficult decision, I took a position at a defense contractor in Florida, vowing that my wife and I would return. After 4 years of growth, we made good on that promise. We've lived in Falcon Heights for 1.3 years where I have served on the Parks and Recreation Commission. During my career in the defense industry, I've held a variety of positions and worked on a diverse set of programs. These opportunities have allowed me to excel in high stress environments where safety is critical to keep people safe and prevent damage to millions of dollars’ worth of equipment. Outside of my responsibilities, I have a passion for giving back to the community. I have personally organized dozens of events to promote physical and financial well-being, technical information exchanges, and STEM education for K-12. Bio Since January 2015, I have worked as a professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the U of M in the St Paul campus. In addition to teach veterinary students, my work is primarily research with focus on livestock diseases, especially pigs and cattle. One of the main roles of my job at the U of M is to serve swine and cattle producer in rural areas of Minnesota and nationwide by providing subsidized services to diagnose infectious diseases. This work has been very rewarding and it has motivated me to explore more opportunities to give back to my community. I have been living in Falcon Heights since April 2016 with my wife (Aline) and three sons (Pedro, Lucas and Andre). I believe that being a volunteer firefighter will meet my interest in serving the community. It will also be an opportunity to set a positive example of giving back to the community for my sons.
