D. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
1. Approval of August 3, 2020 minutes.
E. AGENDA:
1. Community Garden Survey Results
• The commission reviewed the survey regarding community garden
expansion and noted that most of the responders to the survey were home
owners versus renters, most did not currently have a garden plot, and most
were in favor of expansion. The commission also discussed additional
amenities to be offered at the garden and how best to communicate them to
the public. Based on the results of the survey, the Commissioners voted to
support expansion of the community garden plot next spring. This motion
will be presented to the City Council.
2. Winter Activities
• The Commission discussed possible winter activities in the parks and how to
promote community involvement while creating a safe environment during
the pandemic. As the City will not be providing a warming house or rink
attendants for the 2020-2021 skating season, the commission discussed
strategic orientation of existing park amenities to ease donning/doffing of
skates and accessing the ice at Curtiss Field and The Grove as well as
installation of a timer for public access to lights. The commission also
discussed the possibility of installing additional ice rinks at Community Park
or Falcon Heights Elementary School. The commission also reviewed
feedback from a neighborhood social media discussion board to solicit ideas
for winter activities. Suggested activities include: snow sculpture
competition, providing a map of area sledding hills, creating a large snow
mound for kids to climb on, and creating ski trails around the city. In
addition, the commission appealed to the City Administration for
information on available funding for the creation and promotion of winter
activities as well as recruitment of citizen leaders.
