MEMO FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COMMISSION Meeting Date: 11/16/20 Agenda Item No.: - Department Approval Executive Director Approval Item Description: CTV North Suburbs Potential Partnership Opportunities Page 1 of 1 BACKGROUND 1 CTV North Suburbs is a digital media production partner serving cities, nonprofits and government agencies 2 looking to connect and engage with their communities. CTV’s core services include municipal meeting 3 coverage, webcasting, social media coordination, community engagement videos. During Executive Director 4 Healy’s presentation, she will walk through the services and opportunities, specifically around community 5 engagement videos and broadcasting translation services, and opportunities around city-wide engagement 6 content. 7 8 Under the community engagement videos service, CTV North Suburbs has been providing language 9 translation services in order to build a more inclusive, engaging community. CTV has been the technical 10 agency behind the Governor Tim Walt’s addresses to execute live Spanish, Hmong, and Somali translations 11 of important news briefs. This is a service we feel is valuable to the community, and we are looking for 12 opportunities in the broadcasting translation space. 13 14 Additionally, CTV North Suburbs is undergoing a name and brand change to NineNorth. Approval of Minutes: • September 21, 2020 Approved, 5-0. E. DISCUSSION 1. Human Rights Day 2020 event • Staff reached out to the International Institute and connected with Micaela Schuneman, the Refugee Services Director as a potential speaker at the event. • Micaela was present to participate in the discussion, along with another staff member from II. • At the last meeting, we discussed the theme of refugees and migrants and the possibility of hosting a panel of speakers. • Commission is looking for presentation that focuses on refugee experiences in Minnesota, and would like to include panel of individuals that could share personal stories • Stories could be prerecorded and shared in advance to allow people to access at their convenience along with information and resources • Presentation portion should be kept to under 40 minutes to keep people engaged • Event could put a positive spin on the topic by emphasizing the strengths and benefits that immigrants and refugees bring to the community • Council Member Wehyee offered to serve on the panel and share his personal story at the event and speak about the Welcoming City policy and why the Council implemented the policy • Staff can advertise for panelists in the weekly newsletter • The title for the event was set: “Stories of Courage: New Americans and Expanding our Work to be a Welcoming City” • The Commission would ask Micaela to define and explain what “New American” means • The event would be broadcast on cable by CTV, but for people wanting to participate in the Q&A, they would need to join the webinar. • The commission would discuss a facilitator and/or MC for the event in November. Dena Larrabee said she may be interested • The deadline for participants in a panel was set as Wednesday, November 11. 2. Discuss chairperson transition • The commission is currently without a chairperson since Kim Jacobsen stepped down in September. There will be an election for a new chairperson at the meeting in January. • Katie Kohn may be interested in serving as interim chair for the remainder of the year. • Staff would follow up to discuss the role and responsibilities via phone with Katie. • The commission would not meet in the month of December. 3. Discuss new resident welcoming strategy • Dena would like to see this responsibility reassigned because she is busy with the community conversations meetings/planning. • Andrea and Katie volunteered; staff would send information about new residents so they can deliver door hangers or welcome packets. ITEM FOR DISCUSSION Families, Fields and Fair __________________________ The City That Soars! Item Human Rights Day 2020 event Description The event is scheduled for Thursday, December 10 at 7:00pm. Zoom/CTV CTV has been contacted about the event and will be live-streaming it on cable television. A Zoom Webinar has been created and registration is open. CEC members should make sure they are registered for webinar. Panel At the meeting in October, the Commission indicated that they would like to hold a panel discussion in conjunction with the presentation. Panelists would ideally include individuals who identify as New Americans or who have personal experience with refugee and citizenship issues. At least three individuals have been identified and are willing to participate on the panel. Stories- Written and/or Oral Commission members also indicated that they would like to gather stories from individuals to curate on the website and share leading up to the event on December 10. Staff created an online form to submit stories. Event Outreach Staff created and shared on social media a Facebook event to promote the event. The flyer has been included in the weekly e-newsletter. With the help of Council Member Wehyee, Staff connected with CTC to share information on the event. Staff also contacted the U of M Human Rights Club and Green Card Voices.
