Item Special Workshop – Meeting with the Alleyway Plowing Organizers & Public
Works Director Callahan
Description
In advance of the workshop, the City Council is asked to meet with plowing
organizers and public works to discuss the potential of the city taking over
alleyway plowing. This will be an informal format to allow open discussion on
what to consider when the item is discussed more formally in the regular
workshop setting.
The organizers of the 14 alleyways that would be considered were sent a letter.
Some sent written comment, which are included as attachments in the packet.

The City of Falcon Heights will hold an open house at City Hall, located at2077 Larpenteur Ave. W., at 5:30 PM on
Wednesday,May 27, to gather feedback on the City's proposed plan for providing alleyway plowing services.
This Open House is an opportunity to ask questions and share comments prior to the City Council's discussion on whether to
move forward with providing this service to Falcon Heights residents who live on an alley.
If you are unable to attend and would like to submit a written comment or request additional information, please contact City
staff by email at mail@falconheights.org or by phone at 651-792-7600. Written comments must be received prior to 4:00 PM
on May 27th to be included in printed materials and shared with Council.

Dear Jack,
I am the person who collects the plowing money for the California/ldaho alley between Pascal and
Albert. I would greatly appreciate it if plowing were taken over by the city. I've been doing this job for
10 years. Every year the vast majority of the neighbors contribute, but every year I supplement the
plowing charge because of a few who dq not pay. lf the city could provide timely plowing (similar to
what happens now) this would be a real service for the city residents and would foster good
will among neighbors.

Dear Council- Membens:
This letten is in neply to a nequest fon infonmation concenning the
pnoposal fon the city to snow plow the alleys in oun neighbonhood. I
am appneciative that you ane considening this option, and I suppont it.
I am a 55 yean nesident of Fal-con Heights and have paid a fee each wintento have the alley plowed. My neighbon, Dave Thomas (deceased), collected
fon the neighbons on the t3OO block of Hoyt and Iowa fon most of theseyeans. I took oven the col-l-ection in 20t9. tale have an unusual alIey
stnucture as its T shape is the back end of the businesses on Hamline
Avenue. The can nepain business is the only one of the businesses that
has financially supponted the plowing along with the neighbons. The
othen businesses have neven neplied to the nequest.
The alley plow senvice and I set up the plowing contract each yean. We
have been senviced by the same company since 20t9. Oun individual costs
pen winter ane now $+0 per household. While the collection pnocess has
gone well fon the most pant, l-ate contnibutons have muddied the pnocess
oven time. Howeven, with pnompting, everyone has paid thein fain shane.
I am much in favon of having the city take oven this plowing pnocess.
The equipment used fon plowing now is a pickup tnuck and attached plow,
and I am assuming that the city has equipment that is pnobably mone
compatible with the plowing as it connects with city stneets. I am sune
the pnesent system of plowing will not be appneciated by the independent
snow-plowens and I am sonny about that as they have been dependable oven
the yeans.

electnonic letten wiII be sent to the website.
