Council Goal Setting Workshop
June 20, 2007
Members present: Mayor Gehrz, Council members Harris, Talbot and Lindstrom, Administrator Miller, Assistant City Administrator/Deputy Clerk Kreuser. Members absent: Council member Kuettel.
Mayor Gehrz called the workshop to order at 6:05 p.m.
Mayor Gehrz first asked if the council wanted to make any additions to the 2007 goals. Council member Lindstrom replied he wanted to see some environmentally-friendly initiatives outlined.
The council discussed the new goal, and formed the strategies and action items.
The council then went through the remaining goals, deleting the items that have been completed.
Among items deleted due to completion: Complete migration to the 800 MHz public safety communication system for police, fire, and public works personnel, review tobacco and alcohol license
penalties, review rental policies and usages, organize an Adopt-A-Park program, complete the update and begin implementation of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan,
negotiate with the University of Minnesota for the extension of the leases of Community Park and Grove Park, continue research of a community garden, rewrite the City Assessment Manual,
publicize the opening of the Gibbs Museum Bed and Breakfast, publicize the opening of the Equine Center, support and publicize the “Second Annual Treasures of Falcon Heights Tour,” include
recreation programming in the Parks & Recreation Master Plan, investigate alternative domain name, review and clarify staffing assignments and responsibilities, create a resident listserv
that is sectional and private, utilize an exception list for those things that we cannot or choose not to do online, prioritize privacy policies to address implementation of this goal.
Goals that were added include:
Conduct proactive neighborhood crime prevention meetings as needed, promote services provided by SAPD such as premise checks, vacation checks and carseat safety, support and continue
to promote an Adopt-A-Park program, implement the Parks and Recreation Master Plan, use non-profit organizations such as NYFS, pursue residential streetlighting study, pursue collaborative
funding for a bituminous pathway at FH Elementary playground, conduct a council meeting with students, contact RAMS or RAHS to solicit youth commission members, Met Council representive
presentation at future council meeting, provide critical information in a timely manner utilizing city’s list serv, and provide for a clean, healthy, sustainable environment.
An additional strategy, dealing with the city’s recycling, include: undertake efforts to maximize recycling, with the following action items: explore moving to a single-sort recycling
system, research an incentive program to encourage recycling, investigate collecting recycling on a weekly basis. Strategy 2: consider environmental benefits in city purchasing, with
the following action items: consider environmentally-friendly options in city vehicles and public works, change to energy-efficient, compact light bulbs. Strategy 3: continue support
of Community Garden, with the following action items: investigate placement of dedicated water line to garden, continue publicity in newsletter, on website, and in the Falcon Flyer.
The workshop was adjourned at 8:25 p.m.
