Ramsey County Presentation.
Guest Sheila Shullow, a representative from Ramsey County Citizen
Communication Task Force, gave a brief presentation to the commission
outlining the county's strategic planning process and vision statement
regarding parks and open space. This collaborative process is part of the
Home Rule Charter, and incorporates all levels of government, consumer ,
non profit groups, business and citizens. This partnership has the
responsibility for carrying out the vision created on behalf of the entire
county. The task force has identified critical issues relating to parks and
open spaces, and has developed a vision statement that is being shared with
other cities. A copy of this statement and related documents were
distributed to the commission.
Tree Planting Program
Guest Peggy Lynch, Director of Friends of the Parks and Trails, spoke to
the commission about their tree program. This program is in it's fourth
year, with approximately 250 to 300 trees being donated to Ramsey County
parks each year. Brochures including tree descriptions, price list and
program information will be available in January, with trees available for
pick-up in April. There is a memorial /gift tree program available. To
promote the donation of trees to Falcon Heights parks, and to ensure that
appropriate types and numbers of trees are donated, it was suggested that
the city identify it's need, and make specific requests. Carol Kriegler and
city forester Linda Treeful will begin this process. Friends of Parks and
Trails will handle publicizing this "wish list" in community newspapers.
Falcon Heights School Site Improvement
Carol Kriegler updated the commission on the Falcon Heights school
playground improvement. Play equipment proposals are due by noon on
Monday August 21st. The commission will meet at the school to review the
proposals with school representatives, and make a design selection
recommendation. The proposals will also be available for review at city
hall. It is anticipated that the play equipment contract will be awarded at
the August 23rd city council meeting.
Curtiss Field Picnic
The second annual friends of Curtiss Field picnic will be held August 15th.
• Picnic suppers and snowcones will be sold to support the "Time In"
Recreation program. The new Curtiss Field tee shirts and sweats will be
available for purchase. Last year's event was attended by over 100 people.
We anticipate another great group as we say good-bye to another fun filled
summer at Curtiss Field park.
