Approval of minutes June 14, 2004 • 3. Approval of agenda 4. Staff Report a. Curtiss Field Update: Davy met with the Project Manager, Greg Robinson, and the goal is to have the sidewalk completed, the pond seeded, and the slab of concrete in for the gazebo by the end of this week. The sidewalk is approximately 95% completed. The pond seeding is questionable and will depend on the weather. Seed planting for the field is on hold until August 1. All plants and trees will be put in beginning August 15 through the State Fair. One change was made to the original plans - fourfeet of sod will be added to each side of the sidewalk to prevent damage to plants. New park signs will be purchased for the park. Carol Kriegler, former City employee, started her own sign business and has been contacted about doing signs for the park. Three signs will be purchased - 1 large sign approximately 4 ft x 7 ft and 2 smaller signs approximately 3 ft x 5 ft. Suggestions for the placement of the signs included one on the northwest corner of the park along Idaho Ave., one on the southwest corner of the park, and a third one on the southeast corner as you enter the park on Iowa Ave. Davy showed photos of other signs in the Roseville area that were done by Kriegler. . Kuettel liked the look of the signs having an arched top similar to the Evergreen Park example shown. Davy suggested having the City falcon logo at the top, "Curtiss Field, " in the middle, and "Falcon • Heights Parks & Recreation" or "City of Falcon Heights" at the bottom. Many signs in other communities have a green background. Evans suggested making the background a different color to differentiate our signs. Davy mentioned that the paint on the playground equipment at Curtiss Field was chipping. Kuettel suggested getting volunteers, such as the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, to repaint the structure. b. Planning for the 2004 Ice Cream Social: A dunk tank will be one activity at this year's event. Long and Kuettel agreed to fill a time slot in the dunk tank. Kuettel suggested creating more signage to lure people to the dunk tank. The jazz band Red Beans & Rice has been booked once again for the event. Kuettel said the Lyons Club plays an important role in the event and should be contacted as soon as possible. Other activities at the Ice Cream Social include Spin Art, Fish Pond, Cake Walk, Face Painting, Sport Challenges, Tug of War, Water Balloon Toss, Art Class Collage and Fire & Police vehicle displays. Some other suggestions for activities at the event included a horse drawn carriage, similar to the Dead of Winter event, and a moonwalk. c. Public Works Director Update: Interviews for the new Public Works Director will begin on Tuesday, July 13. The city hopes to hire someone within two weeks. d. Recreation Update: Recreation programs are in their fourth week. Everything is running smoothly. There has only been one complaint and that was from a parent who was new to the program and confused about how games were scheduled. Games are held Monday -Thursday in the evenings at Community Park for Soccer, T-Ball and Baseball. Davy mentioned looking to add some new programs for Fall and Winter and mentioned the idea of sending the recreation brochure out to all residents rather than just to community schools. Kuettel agreed, saying that some families miss out on opportunities to participate because they do not receive the information. Dolan recommended Kimberly Kuhens as a Park Commission member. Kuhens applied for the position and her appointment is on the July 14, 2004 City Council agenda. Dolan mentioned that Kuhens is great with his kids and is involved in many clubs and knowledgeable about various issues. Evans inquired about the number of people who are supposed to be on the Park Commission. Kuettel thought that there was no minimum, but the maximum was nine people. e. Addendum -Capitol Improvement Fund • At the June 14, 2004 Park Commission meeting, Maertz mentioned that the money to pay for new lights at Curtiss Field would come out of the Capitol Improvement Fund. Kuettel reviewed the budget and brought up the fact that there is not enough money in that fund to pay for the lights. Maertz also mentioned that the new park signs at Curtiss Field would come from the Capitol Improvement Fund. The Fire Department is in need of a new fire truck this year and funds are being moved around to pay for the new vehicle. Due to this fact, Kuettel suggested that Davy discuss the issue with Heather Worthington. Meeting ended at 7:40 p.m. Minutes respectfully submitted by Ann Davy.
