Absent: Paul Faust, Michael Thomas 1. Meeting called to order 6:30 PM 2. Approval of minutes May 14, 2007 Meeting. Motion was made by Green and seconded by Mielke 3. Staff Report Recreation Update- Abernathy reported that summer staff training would be beginning this week and programs will begin the week of June 18t .There have been multiple class cancellations due to low numbers so Abernathy has been contacting parents regarding transferring to a different class or issuing them a refund. Abernathy also reported that she attended a "Sports Day" event over at Commonwealth Terrace to try and recruit more registrations for City programs being held there. There was a decent amount of attendees to the event but only one registration was received from a resident there and it was for a program not at Commonwealth. Abernathy stressed some issues with programs not receiving much interest over there as in the past so is looking for suggestions on what the role the park and rec. might have there in the future. 4. Ice Cream Social Abernathy reported that this years Ice Cream Social will be held on Thursday, July 26th from 6pm-8pm at Community Park and to mark calendars so the Park Commission can be well represented. Preparations have begun and will continue after programs get up and going. Abernathy then asked the Commissioners for any ideas for different attractions or games they want to see or have available. Commissioner's ideas were: A petting zoo or farm • animals, water wars stations and relay races. 5. Comprehensive Plan work Paula Mielke asked the Commissioners input on the Table of Contents she had come up with for the Park Plan and asked for any suggestions on changes or if it was ok to move forth with. All Commissioners agreed that the i Table of Contents looked good and covered all the areas the Park Plan should cover. Regarding the goals that will be created, Harris suggested we contact other City commissions to see what their goals are and if we could incorporate any of their goals with our goals. Harris also asked about the study done by the students from the Humphrey Institute and if we can incorporate any of their suggestions into the plan. Abernathy said she would obtain their study and bring it to the next meeting as well as contact other Commissions to see if there are any goals we may be able to join in accomplishing. Mielke suggested bringing back an idea that was done years ago, creating a directory of some sort that noted residents of Falcon Heights and what their interests were as used to form groups such as a book club, cooking club, etc. Ozasky then asked if anyone knew who had control or ownership over the area at the end of Lindig. Harris said it is the homeowners in that area who control it and have cared for it in the past. Abernathy then asked the Commission to revise the revised Mission and goals. Commissioners offered their suggestions and Abernathy will be rewriting them and will get approval from the Commission at the July meeting. 6. New Business Abernathy reported that the CERT group has come up with play kits to entice more people to have block parties. These kits include a parachute, Frisbees • and some foam balls along with a packet of different games they can play with the equipment. Abernathy also noted that we will begin our travels out to the parks for our next couple of meetings. The July meeting will be held at Grove Park.
