HomeMy WebLinkAboutPRCAgenda_08Jun9~ Minutes City of Falcon Heights, Park and Recreation Commission Meeting May 12, 2008 6:30PM Meeting Chair. Annie Green Minutes By: Lisa Abernathy Present: Tim Pittman, Michael Thomas, Melissa Weber-Sanders, Chuck Long. Absent: Paula Mielke, Paul Faust and Gary Kwong 1. Meeting called to order 6:35 PM 2. Approval of minutes April 14, 2008 Meeting. Motion made by Weber-Sanders • 3. Tour Open Land Parcel. The Commission walked down to the open land parcel that is located off of Lindig Street. Commissioners did discuss the possibility that it could be used or turned into a dog park type area however it is known that the neighbors in the area like their quiet and may not be open to it being developed into anything. The Commission decided to leave it for now but possibly discuss it in the future. 4. Staff Report Recreation Update-Abernathy reported that registrations are still coming in consistently, summer staff has been hired and she is working on preparing for programs. Abernathy also reported that the individual she has hired for the summer Preschool Activity Instructor position is also very qualified in the areas of personal training/running and Rugby so she has been coordinating some potential programs with him. Abernathy also updated the Commission on the possibility of combining with the fire department and creating a new fall event. Abernathy spoke with the Chief Kurhajetz and they were very excited to have us on board. As of right now it is planned for the first or second weekend in October. The City will also be acquiring the use of a "Safe Escape House", a mini house that simulates a fire with smoke and heat and is operated by fireman who then teach kids what to do if there is a fire in their house or bedroom. • Abernathy then asked the Commission for other activities that may be included in this event. Many Commission members collectively discussed it being a "fall fest" of some sort where maybe the local businesses or restaurants are included. Long reminded the Commission of the Southwest Corner's event- Taste of Falcon Heights and that many of the local businesses and restaurants • came on board to help with that event. Abernathy reported she would take the idea back to City staff and see what other ideas come about. Public Works Update- Pittman reported that they have fertilized the parks, put in the new grills and put in the second sign up at Community Park. Pittman also reported that he will have two seasonal staff on hand this summer that will be helping with the mowing and weed wiping. 5. City Hall Front Yard Abernathy noted this topic was on our list for this months agenda items so has brought the topic back to see if Commissioners have had any further ideas. Abernathy did report her findings on the cost of a movie screen for movie in the park type event. Through the main company in Minnesota who provides this service it would be about $900 to rent a screen, about $300 for the film license and then some extra costs like mileage to the screen company. Abernathy will look at some other options but at that cost it might be something the Commission comes back to discussing. 6. 1000 Bench Program Abernathy provided the Commission with a current map of all the MTC bus benches that are located in Falcon Heights. From this the Commission looked at possible locations where a bench would be appropriate. Weber- Sanders suggested asking the Walking club where they would like to see benches. • Abernathy noted the Walking club is still in its beginning stages but would ask Melanie for them to make a note of this when participating in their walks. The Commission then located six spots in which a bench would be appropriate. Abernathy will begin the application process and if more benches are available they will discuss any further bench needs. 7. New Business Next Park Commission meeting will be Monday, June 9th at 6:30pm. Adjournment Motion made by Maronde and seconded by Thomas Minutes respectfully submitted by Lisa Abernathy.
