Annual Ice Cream Social -- Thursday, July 30 ADJOURNMENT MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING May 11, 1992, 7:00 p. m. Members Present: Carol Weisberg, Morris Nicholson, Linda McLoon, Lloyd Jacobson, Carol Kriegler, Park and Rec. Director, Sue Gehrz, Council Liaison Members Absent: Carol Huso, Dave Wickhem, Steve Schugel, Jyneen Thatcher 1. Update Carol K said that a few days after the due date, Big Toy sent their final proposal, and it had 18 slides. The bid for the playground equipment at the community park will be on the agenda for the next city council meeting for approval. The equipment hopefully will be ordered as soon as possible, with a start date of May 25 and a completion date of June 1. After much discussion with Mike Dorsey the order including the surfacing around the handicapped area. The border edging will be made of recycled plastic materials and be rounded, instead of square. They are still testing this edging material, so our park will be a test site. It means we will be getting a more expensive product than the redwood border, that hopefully will have a longer life expectancy. Carol K said that a pop machine will soon be put outside the building at the Community Park, serviced by RC. Jyneen looked at the plant specs for the prairie restoration and thought it was good. We need to be sure to fence the area until it is well established. The county developed specs based on two companies and is well done. It might be best to let community groups plant seedlings, with a given group planting one species. This helps with-their needs for community projects and helps us with a greater investment of people in our park. 2. Park Hours Due to vandalism at Curtiss Field, we discussed changing the park hours at both Curtiss Field and at the Grove park. This might help reduce vandalism, which seems to happen late at night and also is a courtesy to the neighbors. Carol K will talk to police about whether it is better to have set hours or to be more ambiguous and have park closing a certain time after sunset. Set hours give the police better reason to stop someone in the park. 3. Update on Task Force for Falcon Heights School area A meeting was held, but was fairly unproductive. The Phys. Ed. teacher John Savory did not show up, nor did the district facilities person (Len Copt?). Ellen Blank, principal, indicated that they do not have definitive improvement plans in terms of position of a new gymnasium, while hopefully will be added sometime after the bond referendum passes (always assuming it will pass!). It was the general feeling that this was not a good time to be planning playground facility upgrades at the school. The district and school seemed to be reluctant to make any commitment to space. We-can continue to plan and budget for improvements outside the possible construction limits. With the bond issue coming in Sept., it is clear that we won't do anything at this site this summer. We need to determine what kind of square footage might be available for upgrading playground facilities. 5. As there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm Respectfully submitted, C Linda McLoon, Secretary Meeting Date: 7/13/92 Agenda Item: D-1 CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION ITEM DESCRIPTION: Falcon Heights School/Recreation Facility Task Force -- Update SUBMITTED BY: Carol Kriegler, Park & Rec Director REVIEWED BY: EXPLANATION/SUNIlKARY: At the March 9th commission meeting, the commission voted unanimously to establish a task force to study the recreational needs of the northeast quadrant of the city, and possible opportunities for recreation facility improvement and development at Falcon Heights School. A report will be made outlining what progress has been made in exploring improvement opportunities for the school site. A preliminary schedule of proposed capital improvements should now be made in preparation for the 1993 budget process. ACTION REQUESTED: Compilation of a proposed capital improvement schedule for Falcon Heights School. Meeting Date: 7/13/92 Agenda Item: D-2 CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION ITEM DESCRIPTION: Curtiss Field -- Report on vandalism and nuisance incidents SUBMITTED BY: Carol Kriegler, Park & Rec Director REVIEWED BY: EXPLANATION/SUMMARY: A report will be made outlining what vandalism and nuisance incidents have occurred at Curtiss Field and what measures are being taken to deal with the problem. Meeting Date: 7/13/92 Agenda Item: D-3 CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION ITEM DESCRIPTION: Summer Programs Update SUBMITTED BY: Carol Kriegler, Park & Rec Director REVIEWED BY: EXPLANATION/SUMMARY: Summer recreation programs began the week of June 22nd. A total of 337 youth are enrolled. A breakdown of participation follows: Mighty Mites ----- 38 Beg. Ball Skills --17 What's Cookin------10 Crafts for Kids ---13 Scrimmage BB ------ 8 T-Ball-------------61 Nearball ----------89 Mini-soccer--------24 Super-soccer-------52 Tennis-------------25 In addition, about 40 people attended the family fire prevention seminar on Thursday, June 25. There are 10 junior leaders assisting in programs and 6 scholarships were awarded for a total of $98.00. Meeting Date: 7/13/92 Agenda Item: D-4 CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION ITEM DESCRIPTION: Annual Ice Cream Social --- Thursday, July 30. SUBMITTED BY: Carol Kriegler, Park & Rec Director REVIEWED BY: EXPLANATION/SUMMARY: The annual ice cream social is scheduled for Thursday evening, July 30. This is a festive night with kids games and activities, live entertainment and refreshments. "Trisha and the Toons" are scheduled to perform. Junior Leaders have been asked to serve refreshments. Arrangements needs to be made for cake donations, beverages and miscellaneous arrangements.
