Present: Lois Millett, Greg Schaefer, Carol Weisberg, Nancy Wickhem, Carol
Kriegler (Parks Director), Chris Ammann (summer recreation program coordinator).
Absent: Steve Schugel, Laura Kuettel (Council Liaison)
1. Welcome to new Commission member Lois Millet.
2. Minutes of the 4/8/96 meeting were approved.
3. Thanks to ail who helped with the clean up of the parks on April 20 and with the
UNITREE planting project on May 4.
4. Summer recreation program update. 300-400 kids typically participate. This
year the summer staff is doing more advance planning and trying to offer activities that
have a wider appeal. Enrollment is good for all classes except Crafts for Kids,
Cooking, and All Sorts of Sports. Chris Ammann has put together a calendar with
daily program plans for Time-In. She brought in samples of some of the very creative
activities she has planned. Program begins the week of June 17.
5. Bike safety program will be held at Curtis Field on June 27. This event will be
advertised through the summer recreation program. The Lion's Club will donate 20
bike helmets. We would like to give the helmets to kids who don't have them. We
decided to have kids answer three bike safety questions, one of which will be, "Do you
have a bicycle helmet?" The helmets will be given to kids who don't have one. The
remaining helmets, if any, will be taken to City Hall. Kids in the summer program will
be given a note saying, "If you don't have a bike helmet, call City Hall."
6. Ice cream social is scheduled for Thursday, July 25. The Stomp N' Dixie band
will play, the Fire Department will bring a fire truck and ambulance, and there will be
games and crafts for children. Refreshments will be sold.
7. Teen club. The Commission would like to find out what other cities are doing
about providing a place for teens to get together in a safe environment. We would like
to explore this topic to see if we can come up with a way to help meet this need.
8. Dogs continue to be a big problem in the parks. Carol Kriegler will investigate
clever signage for the parks.

EXPLANATION /SUMMARY: With the close of summer, comes the planning
and preparation of the city's 1997 operating budget and 5 year capital
improvement program. Following is a copy of the capital program as it was
adopted for 1996. The Parks and Recreation Commission may want to
review the program and make recommendations for changes or additions.
The City Council is currently conducting budget workshops and is expected
to formally adopt a budget in late fall.

ITEM DESCRIPTION: Middle School /High School Recreation Program
Exploration and Planning
SUBMITTED BY: Carol Kriegler, Parks and Recreation Director
EXPLANATION /SUMMARY: At the commission's June meeting, members
expressed an interest in providing increased recreational opportunities for
middle school and high school aged youth.
To facilitate this exploration and discussion, Carol Kriegler will research and
report on the efforts and programs being conducted on behalf of these kids
by some of our neighboring communities.
