REPORTS, REQUESTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: D.-1 1996 summer recreation program update D.-2 Annual ice cream social event planning ADJOURNMENT Minutes City of Falcon Heights Parks and Recreation Commission April 8, 1996, 7:00 p.m. Members Present: Greg Schaefer, Carol Weisberg, Carol Kriegler (Parks Director), Laura Kuettel (Council Liaison). Absent: Steve Schugel, Nancy Wickhem. 1. Minutes of the 3/25/96 meeting were distributed. 2. 1996 summer recreation program brochure was reviewed and discussed. Falcon Heights Elementary School will not charge us for gym rental for Open Gym. The Lions Club has contributed $228 to help support Open Gym. We will offer °High Five open gym four days per week for 90 minute sessions. It will be user friendly, with no registration or fee payment required. It will operate as a "drop-in" neighborhood program for kids in grades 4 and up. New offerings include All Sorts of Sports and Away for the Day Club, designed for children in grades 4 and up. In addition, there will be activities in Grove Park four days a week. The brochure will be distributed through the schools on Wednesday of this week. 3. Park clean-up day will be Saturday, April 20, from 9:00 a.m.-noon. Friends and neighbors are being encouraged to help clean up their neighborhood park. At least one commission member will be at each park (Grove Park, Curtiss Field, Community Park) to provide leadership, serve refreshments, and thank participants. Carol Kriegler will make up a "to do" list for each park. The City will provide trash bags, shovel, and recycling bins. The Lion's Club will be helping out at Community Park. 4. UNITREE tree and shrub planing project will take place on Saturday, May 4. The City received a grant of $6,000 to fund this. project. We will be planting 26 trees and 62 shrubs. There will be a 30 minute educational component at Community Park at 8:30 a.m. after which volunteers will go to their respective sites to begin planting. Three trees will be planted at Curtis Field, and the remainder will be planted at Community Park. We plan to recruit about 30 volunteers for this project. Several scout troops have been contacted as well as the Falcon Heights/Lauderdale Lions Club. Members of the community are being encouraged to participate. Commission members will participate at both parks. 5. The Community Playroom will close for the season on April 12. We need to decide whether to offer evening hours again next year. Attendance at evening sessions is very low. Submitted by Carol Weisberg Meeting Date: 6/10/96 Agenda Item: D-1 CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION ITEM DESCRIPTION: 1996 summer recreation program update SUBMITTED BY: Carol Kriegler, Parks and Recreation Director REVIEWED BY: EXPLANATION /SUMMARY: 1996 summer recreation program brochures were distributed at area elementary schools a couple of months ago. Program registration has been steady with activities scheduled to start the week of June 17. In addition to the popular traditional offerings of t-ball, soccer, and nearball, less structured recreational opportunities are being made more available this year through an expanded "Time-in" playground program know offered 2 afternoons at Grove Park), and a "High-Five" open gym program at Falcon Heights School. In previous meetings the commission has had considerable discussion and interest in these less structured "drop-in" recreation programs. There has been an interest in making these programs highly accessible with a wide variety of activity offerings. This summer's recreation program staff has begun planning for the upcoming season and is prepared to share some of the ideas planned for this summer. Carol Kriegler will give a brief update on the overall status of this summer's recreation programs and Chris Ammann, summer recreation program coordinator, will share some of the plans for "Time-In" and "High-Five". Meeting Date: 6/10/96 Agenda Item: D-2 CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION ITEM DESCRIPTION: Annual ice cream social event planning SUBMITTED BY: Carol Kriegler, Parks and Recreation Director EXPLANATION /SUMMARY: This year's annual ice cream social is scheduled for Thursday, July 25. The event has traditionally included live entertainment, ice cream, cake, lemonade and other refreshments. It has also traditionally served as the "last hurrah" for the summer recreation programs. The commission might want to do some planning for this event and consider other possible activities or attractions to be included in the event.
