ITEM: Park Clean-up day, Saturday, April 20

EXPLANATION /DESCRIPTION:
In conjunction with Earth Day, friends and neighbors are being encouraged to
come out and help clean up their neighborhood park (Grove Park, Curtiss
Field, Community Park) from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 20.
Falcon Heights residents are being informed of the event and encouraged to
participate with articles in the "Summer Activities" brochure, city newsletter,
and City Hall outdoor sign. The event will receive broader publicity through
WCCO-TV's "4 YOUR PARKS" promotion on television. The Falcon Heights
/Lauderdale Lions Club and a local scout troop have already expressed a
willingness to participate.
It is hoped that commission members might participate in this event by
providing some leadership, serving refreshments, and expressing appreciation
to those who participate.
Some planning would likely increase the probability of a successful and
productive event.

ITEM: "UNITREE" Tree planting project, Saturday, May 4

EXPLANATION /DESCRIPTION:
The City will be conducting a tree and shrub planting project at Community
Park and Curtiss Field this spring as a result of it's success in attaining a
grant through the UNITREE program. The UNITREE program is conducted by
anon-profit organization dedicated to education, employment training, and
environmental stewardship. The purpose of the program is to fund tree
planting in neighborhoods for the primary purpose of promoting energy
conservation through urban reforestation and for sequestration of carbon
dioxide emissions. A required element of the UNITREE grant program is the
utilization of community volunteers for the planting.
The project will entail the planting of about 26 trees and 62 shrubs on the
morning of Saturday, May 4. Volunteers will work in groups of three and
will plant about 3 trees or 30 shrubs per group. It is anticipated that the
project will be complete by about noon.
We are hoping to recruit about 30 volunteers for this project. Several scout
troops have been contacted as well as the Falcon Heights /Lauderdale Lions
Club. Members of the community are being encouraged to participate as
well. Information about the event is being made available through the
"Summer Activities" brochure, city newsletter, and City Hall outdoor sign.
Once again, it is hoped that the Parks and Recreation Commission will be
willing to participate in this event by providing leadership, serving
refreshments, and expressing appreciation to our volunteers. Discussion
would be helpful in determining the extent to which commission members
might be able to participate.

EXPLANATION /DESCRIPTION:
After a considerable needs assessment, which included a student focus
group discussion at Falcon Heights School and a commission sponsored
"round table", the 1996 summer recreation program has been finalized.
Copies of the "Summer Activities" brochure will be distributed at area
schools next week and will be available at Monday night's commission
meeting.
