PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION
MEETING MINUTES
AUGUST 11, 1997
Members Present: Peter Lindstrom, Greg Schaefer, Carol Kriegler

REPORTS, REQUESTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:
D-1. Welcome to New Commission Member Peter Lindstrom
D-2. Falcon Heights School Neighborhood Event
A series of neighborhood gatherings in each of the city's parks and school
grounds has been scheduled. The purpose of the events is to provide
residents with an opportunity to visit with friends and neighbors of their
respective neighborhood.
Carol Kriegler recommended that a neighborhood ice cream social be held on
.the Falcon Heights School playground on Thursday evening, August 26. A
portable push cart is available for rent from an area dairy. The cart has the
• capacity to hold several 3 gallon tubs of ice cream. It was also suggested
that we have rootbeer available for floats, with the cost for either being
$.25. A serving schedule for commission members will be established and
sent out to members. Scooping ice cream cones can be fairly labor intensive
and with good weather we could get a number of folks to come out.
Greg Schaefer reported that he was still having difficulty in confirming the
availability of a local group of musicians to play at the event. He would
continue to work on securing music for the event. It was decided that music
would be played during the heart of the event, 6:45-7:45.
While not in attendance, Laura Kuettel provided a written list of possible
suggestions /ideas for the event. Those ideas follow:
• welcoming banner, name tags, set-up near "Big Toy", use school sign to
promote, bathroom available?, use lions tent, provide large appliance
boxes for play, kids games, guest book, some activity representing
streets, pictures of event, suggestion box, fire /police visits, face
painting, button making, clown club volunteer, food shelf donation drop-
off, water, public service informational fliers.
The list was recognized as full of very good ideas, many that could be done
quite easily.
D-3. With the meeting held at the Community Park, members present took a
. tour of the entire park. It was a beautiful evening with moderate park use
and the prairie in bloom. As we walked through different areas of the park,
• Carol gave a brief history of the development of the park including an
approximate date of the installation/ construction of the various facilities and
improvements. Some discussion took place regarding possible replacement /
maintenance schedules for various pieces of equipment /facilities. Major
areas identified for future improvement /replacement follow:
' Improvement to east entry of park. Possible widening of the fence gate,
fencing improvements and landscaping to provide for more of a
welcoming to the park.
' Old picnic shelter in play area might be relocated at replacement time.
' Staff is looking into life expectancy of hardcourt basketball area. Court
was probably constructed in the 50's and has been resurfaced a number
of times. Could possible be relocated at replacement time.
' Hockey rink lights are old but continue to function OK. Will be replace
when a number of lamps malfunction.
' Park building is to be restained this fall.
' Exercise stations. Will be replaced in '98. Stations are well use but in
poor condition. Parks /Public Works staff has done lots of repairs.
Stations would almost require rebuilding at this point.
' A couple of locations were identified as possibly suitable for the
construction of a sand pit volleyball court.
• The prairie is beginning to mature and has become a real amenity to the
park. It was suggested that we do more to increase awareness of the
prairie area and promote a visit.
