Environment Commission
Meeting Minutes
April 9, 2007
Present: Jim Kielsmeier, Sam Bontrager, Frank Meah, Ron Kroese, Diane Ross, Peter Lindstrom, Justin Miller
Absent: Gretel Keene, Susan Harding
The commission meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM.
The commission reviewed the draft Environment Commission Purpose Statement. Krose moved and Meah seconded that the statement be approved. All voted in favor, so it along with the city
code language will go to the city council for formal approval.
Lindstrom updated the commission on proposed city code language allowing new materials (such as fruit and vegetable peels) in home compost systems. Since this is in the zoning chapter,
the planning commission will review it before going to the city council. The commission asked that efforts be made to publicize the availability of compost bins and rainwater collection
systems.
Miller told the commission that so far 27 people have put their names on the community garden sign-up list. Details such as when to plow, tool storage, and composting materials were
discussed.
Lindstrom asked for suggestions on what to include in the April 30th community garden meeting. Ideas such as introductions, a ribbon cutting, free seeds, and materials from the horticultural
society were discussed. At the next commission meeting there will be a discussion regarding rotating liaisons from the commission to the garden subcommittee.
The meeting adjourned at 7:00 PM.
