Environment Commission
Meeting Minutes
May 14, 2007
Present: Jim Kielsmeier, Ron Kroese, Diane Ross, Gretel Keene, Peter Lindstrom, Justin Miller
Absent: Susan Harding, Sam Bontrager, Frank Meah
The commission meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM.
Minutes of the April 9th meeting were reviewed and approved as submitted.
Lindstrom, Kielsmeier and Miller updated the rest of the commission on the status of the community garden. All stated that the May 5th workday went very well and people seemed very
excited about the project. The Roseville Review provided some good publicity of the event. Lindstrom asked that staff look at the possibility of expediting the placement of a water
source closer to the garden as the current arrangement is quite cumbersome. Miller stated that he would look into it and report back to the commission.
The commission then reviewed the 2006 and 2007 to date recycling statistics provided by Waste Management. Lindstrom volunteered to conduct some research on best practices and whether
weekly pickup would increase the amount of recycled material collected. He will report back to the commission on his findings.
The purpose statement was reviewed again by the commission at the request of the city council. The commission decided to eliminate the sentence “According to EPA the most common and
abundant air pollutants are carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, ozone, lead, and particulate matter. Well over 50% of these pollutants come from motor vehicles.” in order
to make it more consistent with the rest of the purpose statement. The revised wording will be submitted to the council for their formal approval.
The idea of recruiting at least one youth member to the commission was brought up by Kielsmeier. The commission agreed that recruiting youth was a good idea and they would look for
future members.
Wendy Illick and Jean Wagner from the community garden steering committee also attended the meeting and discussed their initial thoughts about how the garden was progressing, including
the water issue previously discussed.
The meeting adjourned at 7:30 PM.
