Environment Commission
Meeting Minutes
June 11, 2007
Present: Jim Kielsmeier, Diane Ross, Gretel Keene, Peter Lindstrom, Justin Miller
Absent: Susan Harding, Sam Bontrager, Frank Meah, Ron Kroese
The commission meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM.
A quorum was not present, so the minutes were reviewed but not approved. No changes were noted.
Miller provided a brief update regarding the community garden. Everything seems to be proceeding nicely, and a new gate and compost bin have been installed. The garden committee will
continue to meet at 7:00 pm on the same nights as the environment commission to make sure that everything is running smoothly.
Kielsmeier stated that he had recruited a potential youth member, and another potential youth member came to the meeting and expressed interest in joining. Both will be given applications
and interviewed by the mayor if possible.
Lindstrom provided information on recycling best practices. He stated that there is much debate on single vs. dual sorting and the benefits of each. Roseville and Eureka Recycling
both recently completed studies and the results were presented to the commission. Miller agreed to speak to Waste Management about our options for amending our recycling contract to
either a single sort or weekly pick-up option. He will report his findings back to the commission.
Lindstrom then gave a brief review of the Memorandum of Understanding with the waste haulers and noted that they had agreed to provide recycling information in their bills. The commission
agreed that this was something that should be looked into. An idea of a “recycling contest” was also discussed where random recyclers would be rewarded with prizes such as compost bins
or rain barrels. Miller will look into whether or not the SCORE grant can be used for this purpose and report back to the commission.
The meeting adjourned at 7:45 PM.
