Environment Commission
Meeting Minutes
January 14, 2008
Present: Diane Ross, Ron Kroese, Sam Bontrager, Nina Semmelroth, Stan Sveen,
Peter Lindstrom, Justin Miller
Absent: Gretel Keene, Michael Talbot
The commission meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM.
Kroese began by welcoming everybody to the 2008 Environment Commission, and introductions were made. Especially welcomed were the two new members, Nina Semmelroth and Stan Sveen.
Minutes of the November 20, 2007 meeting were reviewed and unanimously approved.
Miller recapped the discussion of holding a Ramsey Conservation District raingarden workshop. The commission was still very excited about the project, and Miller stated that he would
look into open dates at city hall. Lauderdale residents will also be invited to attend.
Miller then spoke about an opportunity through Ramsey County to purchase reusable grocery bags at about $2/bag. They could be offered for sale or as prizes at our community events.
The commission agreed and suggested a purchase of 100-150 bags. Compost bins will also be available at a price of about $30-$40, but the county has yet to select a vendor. These could
be made available to city residents, but pre-orders would need to be placed due to space and cost constraints.
The commission then proceeded to discuss goals and topics for 2008. Ideas brought up included:
Stormwater reduction programs at the home
Accepting fluorescent light bulbs for recycling at city hall
Promoting projects that receive tax incentives (state, federal, utility)
Adding to the city’s website
Investigating the Mayor’s Kyoto Protocol program
Looking at building management techniques at city buildings
Discussing a wind turbine with the University
Promoting local recycling resources
The general theme for the year could be something like “What you can do at your home and in your yard”. More specific themes will be discussed at a future meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 7:30 PM.
