The first item was a joint meeting with the Park and Recreation Commission to discuss alternative fertilizing and weed control practices at our city parks. Michael Thomas from the park and rec commission initiated the discussion by stating that he learned about the topic during a class he recently took, and thought that it was a good idea for the city to pursue. Miller and Pittman agreed to further investigate alternative options that are available and will report back to the commissions. Ross moved and Sveen seconded that the minutes of the February 11th meeting be approved. All voted in favor. Jim Jacques from the Minnesota Climate Change Corps made a presentation informing the commission of their capabilities. Made up of retired engineers, the CCC provides services to cities to address climate change. As part of the Mayor’s Kyoto Agreement, a plan needs to be in place to reduce greenhouse emissions. The CCC will help the city determine a baseline on city-wide emissions and provide suggestions on how to decrease them. Ross moved, and Semmelroth seconded that the commission support the city’s collaboration with the CCC. All voted in favor. The “50 tips to help our planet, one home at a time” flyer was reviewed. The commission made a few suggestions on changes to the document. Once staff updates it, it will be placed in our normal distribution channels. Miller reported that as of March 7th, ten people had signed up for the rain garden workshop. The workshop will be held on March 17th at 6:30. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 PM.
