Meeting Minutes
October 12, 2009
Present: Ron Kroese, Peter Lindstrom, Diane Ross, Nina Semmelroth, Brian Goodspeed, Ethan Wagner, Justin Miller
Absent: Michael Talbot, Stan Sveen, Gretel Keene
Guests: Councilmember Beth Mercer-Taylor
Minutes of September 14th were approved with no changes.
Miller updated the commission on the status of the GreenSteps application and various EPA programs. The city has not received any word on the GreenSteps program, and staff is working
on the EPA toolkits to see how the city can use them. More information will be passed along as it is received.
Miller asked if the commission was willing to co-sponsor the annual neighborhood liaison meeting with the Neighborhood Commission. It will be held in January and would focus on environmental
issues. The commission was supportive, and staff agreed to work with the neighborhood commission to determine an agenda.
Councilmember Mercer-Taylor explained that she has a class at the University of Minnesota that is looking for a capstone project. They are looking for a community to work with in the
area of environmental stewardship. The commission discussed several ideas, but agreed that having the students research best practices relating to recycling would be the most beneficial,
since the city’s recycling contract will need to be renewed within the next year. Mercer-Taylor will follow-up with staff to collect information.
The meeting adjourned at 7:30 pm.
