Environment Commission
Meeting Minutes
March 9, 2009
Present: Ron Kroese, Peter Lindstrom, Diane Ross, Gretel Keene, Ethan Wagner, Stan Sveen, Brian Goodspeed, Justin Miller
Absent: Nina Semmelroth, Michael Talbot
The commission meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM.
1. Minutes of January 12th were approved with no changes.
2. New commissioner Brian Goodspeed introduced himself to the commission.
Miller informed the commission about a possible grant opportunity for rain barrels through the Capitol Region Watershed District. The commission spoke about the benefits and drawbacks
of rain barrels, but voices agreement that it should be pursued as well as a workshop to educate users how to operate them properly.
Miller discussed the upcoming Sustainable Communities Conference to be held in St. Paul. Keene expressed interest in attending, and she agreed to report back to the commission what
she learns.
Kroese asked if anybody from the commission wanted to speak at the upcoming city council/commission meeting on March 25th. Ross indicated that she would be available if Kroese could
not make it.
Possible stimulus grant ideas were suggested. Potential ideas included replacing streetlights with LEDs, providing energy tracking devices on a rental basis, smart energy strips, and
technical assistance for energy audits. Miller will continue to watch for guidance on how to apply for the grants.
Goals for the year were discussed. Potential tasks for the year include:
Recommit to the Minnesota Climate Corps program
Track stimulus grant possibilities
Begin random recycling award
Evaluate alternative sanitary sewer billing structure (conservation billing)
CFL recycling promotion/drop-off site
The meeting adjourned at 7:30 pm.
