HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 10.12.09Minutes ______________________________ City of Falcon Heights, Park and Recreation Commission Meeting October 12, 2009 6:30PM _____________________________ Meeting Chair: Annie Green Minutes By: Lisa Abernathy Present: Gary Kwong, Paul Faust, Tim Pittman, Chuck Long and Serena Jones-White, Michael Thomas Absent: Melissa Weber-Sanders Meeting called to order 6:30 PM Approval of minutes September 14, 2009 Meeting. Faust moved motion to approve Staff Report Recreation Update- Abernathy reported on fall programs currently in progress. Fall soccer, Tae Kwon Do and Yoga are all going well. Coming up later in November Chriscell Rudolph will be back to lead a watercolor painting class for both youth and adults. The Touch-A-Truck event that was held Saturday, October 3rd went very well considering the weather was cold and rainy. Abernathy estimated there were around 100 people in attendance. Public Works Update- Pittman reported that Public Works will be blowing out the irrigation system soon and mowing the parks one last time before the winter season begins. Rink boards will also be put up shortly. This year there will only be a hockey rink at Curtiss Field and Grove Park. Abernathy noted she has made note of outdoor rink changes in the fall/winter activity guide as well as on the website. Dogs in the Park ordinance change Abernathy gave the Commission a draft of the City Council’s policy item regarding change in the dogs in the park ordinance. Jones-White made a motion to approve the policy item and the Commission unanimously approved. Abernathy will put this item on the agenda for the October 28th City Council meeting for approval. Winterfest Event Abernathy asked the Commission to begin thinking about activities/events at this winter’s Winterfest event scheduled for Sunday, January 31, 2010. Green suggested we act on getting the cross country ski’s earlier this year to secure the chance of having them available. Kwong asked if volunteers are needed for this event. Abernathy stated that volunteers will be needed to help in the kitchen, ticket sales and supervising the bonfire/smores. Abernathy asked the Commission for suggestions on distributing the s’more stuff. The Commission suggested distributing the s’more items from the kitchen on a napkin instead of packaging them in zip lock bags to create less waste. Abernathy also noted she has been in touch with Roselawn Stables regarding our event date and will be following up with them shortly to secure their presence at the event. New Business Thomas asked about the status of the bench grant and potential sponsors. Abernathy reported she has heard from The Coffee Grounds who are seeking two benches and TIES who is also seeking possibly two benches. Thomas requested his family claim the bench that would be located on Fairview and Roselawn. Abernathy stated that October 30th is the deadline for potential sponsors so after this deadline she will proceed with the grant application. Abernathy also reminded the Commission about the Falcon Heights Day at the Game on Sunday, October 18th. Falcon Heights residents get into the Gopher Women’s Soccer game free with their Falcon Heights ID. Also the free youth soccer clinic will take place before hand. So far there are 10 registered for this clinic. Next Park Commission meeting will be Monday, November 9 at Falcon Heights City Hall. Adjournment – Faust moved a motion to adjourn at 7:00pm.
