HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 3.9.09Minutes ______________________________ City of Falcon Heights, Park and Recreation Commission Meeting March 9, 2009 6:30PM _____________________________ Meeting Chair: Annie Green Minutes By: Lisa Abernathy Present: Chuck Long, Gary Kwong, Tim Pittman and Paul Faust Absent: Michael Thomas, Melissa Weber-Sanders Meeting called to order 6:30 PM Approval of minutes February 9, 2009 Meeting. Faust approved the minutes with the changes noted. Staff Report Recreation Update- Abernathy reported that the spring/summer program guides have been distributed to the schools and mailed to homes over the past few weeks. Registration began Monday, March 9th and so far Abernathy has taken in 15- 20 registrations. Summer applications are still being taken. Applications are due by Friday, April 3rd. Public Works Update- Pittman reported that as the ground thaws they will be taking the rink boards down. Dogs in the Park Trial Abernathy handed out a list of other communities policies regarding dogs in the parks. The Commission reviewed theses policies and began discussion on what guidelines would be appropriate for the Falcon Heights Dogs in the Park trial run this spring. The Commission will submit these guidelines to the Council and move forward in promoting the trial period beginning at the end of May. Adopt A Park Review Abernathy reported to the Commission that Curtiss Field is currently the only park being adopted. Abernathy sent letters to frequent users of Community Park in hopes to encourage them to volunteer but has not received any requests. This program will continue to be promoted in the program guide, on the website and in the Friends of the Park brochure that was updated a few years ago. Park Guide work Abernathy handed out a few updated documents for the Commissioners to update in their park guide. Abernathy also reported the sections that are still open to be worked on- incorporating park maps, trails, 5 year forecast, community garden and the long term plan. New Business Splash Pad- Abernathy and Pittman handed out some information from the cities of St. Anthony and Robbinsdale regarding their current splash pads. Robbinsdale cost was $225,000 and St. Anthony’s was about $150,000. The Commission discussed keeping this project in mind but for the time being due to budget constraints would not pursue the project at this time. Falcon Heights/Lauderdale 5K- Abernathy reported that details for the 5K are coming along. The proper title of the run will be the Falcon Heights/Lauderdale Family 5K Fun Run/Walk. The date is set for Saturday, August 15th. Abernathy will be meeting with Lauderdale monthly to continue with plans for the 5K. A flyer and online registration will be made available soon. Ice Cream Social Entertainment- Abernathy asked the Commission for their thoughts on entertainment for this summer’s Ice Cream Social. She has a connection with a group called Kidsync who does musical entertainment/Karaoke for families and youth. Green suggested the Commission keep in mind the older generations or non families that attend the event and what might appeal to them. Long and Green suggested contacting the high school band to see if there are any smaller groups looking at showcasing their musical talents or need performance experience. Abernathy will be looking into this as well as other prospects that may be a good fit for the event.
