HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 2.11.08Minutes ______________________________ City of Falcon Heights, Park and Recreation Commission Meeting February 11, 2008 6:30PM _____________________________ Meeting Chair: Annie Green Minutes By: Lisa Abernathy Present: Eric Maronde, Annie Green, Tim Pittman, Michael Thomas, Jason Schober, Melissa Weber-Sanders and Chuck Long. Absent: Paula Mielke and Paul Faust Guest: Mayor Peter Lindstrom Meeting called to order 6:30 PM Approval of minutes January 14, 2008 Meeting. Motion made by Thomas and seconded by Schober Mayor Peter Lindstrom attended the meeting to introduce himself to the members of the Park Commission as well as inform them of goals the City will be working on this year. Lindstrom gave some background of his past experience on the Parks Commission and the importance Parks and Recreation is to the City. Lindstrom also touched on the Neil Kwong award, crime prevention meetings, email alerts and other City goals connecting with parks and recreation. Staff Report Recreation Update- Abernathy reported that Winterfest 2008 had a great turn out despite the horses for the hayride not showing up. Abernathy has spoken to Roselawn Stables and it was a mix up on their part so they have offered to do the event free of charge next year if we choose to have them back. Abernathy suggested the City take them up on their offer as their prices as well as other vendors will be raising prices due to the increase of gas costs. Abernathy then reported that the summer activity guide is almost completed and will be hopefully hitting homes by the first week of March. Abernathy also noted she will begin taking applications for summer positions at the end of February. Abernathy asked if Commissioners know of any suitable applicants to encourage them to apply. Application packets and job descriptions can be found online or at City Hall. Rink Updates- Pittman reported the rinks are looking good and that there is only about two more weeks of the season. Park Plan/Guide Work- Long range planning Long recommended that the long term planning for the Park guide be a reoccurring item on future agendas. This will help keep ideas fresh and something that can be fully thought through. 5. Recreation Program Fees Abernathy reported that all fees for recreation programs being offered this summer and early fall will be raising one dollar to cover a portion of the cost of Paypal, our online registration, as well as the increase in returning staff members hourly pay. Thomas asked about Roseville’s fee. Abernathy will be contacting them on what their increase will be for this summer. 6. “Green Parks” Abernathy reported that City Administrator Justin Miller has not informed her of a set date at this time to have a joint meeting with the Environment Commission. Abernathy will report back next month with a possible time. New Business Trolley Path- Abernathy reported that the City Council has decided they would like to readdress the Trolley Project that was attempted a few years go. Long gave the Commission a quick overview of the project and the road blocks they confronted while working on this project. Commission members agreed that if the project were to be pursued again information on what it would cost to date might be a good place to begin the process. Abernathy will continue the search for background information as well as for charts and pictures that were used in the original project. Green suggested that the Commission meet at the Trolley site so the Commission is familiar with the area the project entails. Walking Club- Abernathy informed the Commission the Neighborhood Commissions and City employee Melanie Leehy’s idea regarding beginning a walking club. At this time the City will be collecting participants email addresses and setting them up to view a Google calendar participants can go to view organized walks and routes. Abernathy reported that Melanie is seeking help from both the Neighborhood Commission and Parks Commission on making this grow. Abernathy stated that this information will be in the spring/summer activity guide to promote it as much as we do our regular recreational programs. Miscellaneous-Commission member Weber-Sanders updated Abernathy on a potential music instructor from St. Anthony who may be interested in hold classes here at City Hall through the parks and rec. She will be updating Abernathy as she knows more. Green pointed out the misspelling of Northome on a few documents in the Park Guide. Abernathy will be fixing those mistakes and redistributing those pages.
