HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 4.14.08Minutes ______________________________ City of Falcon Heights, Park and Recreation Commission Meeting April 14, 2008 6:30PM _____________________________ Meeting Chair: Annie Green Minutes By: Lisa Abernathy Present: Paul Faust, Tim Pittman, Michael Thomas, Melissa Weber-Sanders and Chuck Long. Absent: Paula Mielke, Eric Maronde and Jason Schober Meeting called to order 6:35 PM Approval of minutes March 10, 2008 Meeting. Motion made by Thomas and seconded by Faust Staff Report Recreation Update-Abernathy reported that summer registrations have been coming in quite steadily. At this time there are no classes that are full. Abernathy also reported that the Walking Club is getting off to a good start. There are about 18 people signed up and Melanie the City’s Office Assistant will be getting the member calendar set up shortly for organized walks to begin. Open Gym is now done for the season. Overall turn out was good. Attendance averaged out to be 12-15 participants each time. Public Works Update- Pittman informed the Commission that the new grills for Curtiss Field and Grove Park have arrived and will be put in shortly. Pittman also gave an update on projects that will be going on this spring at Community Park. They will be aerating the field area and laying down some granular fertilizer as well as digging a water line from the park shelter to the community garden. At this time a hose is needed to be dragged to the garden each time and for some plot owners this is very inconvenient or difficult so a new water line will bring water directly to the garden for easier access. Pittman said this project will not disturb any programs in the park. Fall Event Abernathy reminded the Commission of the goal setting meeting and the discussion of adding a fall event of some type to the line up of special events the city puts on. Abernathy brought up the idea of a bike rodeo/safety event much like what has been done in the past with help from the Falcon Heights School. Green mentioned this is a good idea but timing wise it might be more appropriate in the spring before kids are getting out on their bikes. Commissioners agreed and decided to possibly discuss having that be a small event in the spring. Weber-Sanders brought up the idea of a Safe City or overall safety event that would be not only for kids but also adults. It could cover all types of safety. Green mentioned the Touch a Truck event Abernathy spoke about a few months ago. Weber-Sanders recommended tying that type of event in with the fire department’s open house. Abernathy will look into this and see what timing is appropriate as well as look at additional resources we could tap into for this event. Movie in the park was another event that was brought up for a fall/late summer event. Weber-Sanders recommended we kick it off at the Ice Cream Social and then continue into the later half of summer. Abernathy said she would look into the cost of such event. The screen would be a rental fee along with licensing fees to play the movie. Abernathy will report on her findings in the next few meetings. 1000 Bench Program Abernathy handed out copies of the grant application, project criteria and bench site recommendation ARLC has given for information. The Commission discussed possible site for these proposed benches. The consensus was to possibly choose five to six sites for benches and if more were desired or if needed we could apply for more. Abernathy reported that grant applications will be accepted until October of 2009 or until the benches run out. Sites the Commission discussed were: Coffee Grounds area, Along Roselawn where the agriculture fields are, behind the school along Ruggles, in Community Park along the trail somewhere. These were just some ideas brought forth. Long suggested mapping out where Metro Transit currently has benches and then seeing if there is a need to fill in any gaps. Abernathy stated for the May’s meeting she will get together a map with metro transit benches as well as destinations people may walk to in the City. The Commission will then select five areas in need of a bench and then proceed with the application. Weber-Sanders also recommended when the time comes we publicize the opportunity for residents or businesses to buy in towards a bench paver. Much like other communities do with bricks or sidewalk pavers. The Commission will continue this project discussion at next months meeting. 6. New Business Abernathy reported that Deputy Clerk Stacey Kreuser is seeking election judges for this year’s primary and general election. Interested individuals just have to be 18 and available on the election days. Judges are paid for their time committed. Interested individuals should contact Stacey at 651-792-7614 or contact Lisa and she will pass your name along. Green recommended that for next months meeting we go and visit the two land parcels that are currently open space to verify the amount of space that is open and not currently being used. This will help with future references to land not being used and what, if anything it would be appropriate and not appropriate to use it for.
