Staff Report
Recreation Update-. Abernathy reported that summer programs are in full swing and going well. Planning for fall and winter programs have begun and asked the Commissioners for any ideas
or programs they would like to see. Abernathy asked the Commission their thoughts on the Community Playroom. Mielke suggested we poll Ice Cream Social participants if they have heard
of the program or if they would attend such a program. After the poll we will take a closer look and see if the program is worth continuing considering the decline in attendance in the
past two years. Abernathy also reported that the planning for the Ice Cream Social was wrapping up and everything is set for the event but she is still looking for a few volunteers as
well as dunk tank participants. Abernathy also reported that the City did not receive the Blue Cross Blue Shield walking grant it had applied for to use towards a walking club. The
refusal was not due to our application but simply a lack of money left to give out. The City plans on trying to start this walking club regardless to see if there is interest and apply
for another grant in the future. Abernathy also handed out the Environment Commission’s goals and mission statement to see if there are any goals we can work together in achieving.
Mielke suggested the rain gardens and working with them to get a few of those up and running, possibly in the front yard of City Hall. Abernathy will stress the Park Commission’s interest
to the staff liaison for the Environment Commission.
Comprehensive Plan Work
Mielke asked the Commission their thoughts on how the Park and Recreation budget should be explained or displayed in the new plan. Mielke also asked if there was a way to get
budget information from comparable cities and showing those in the plan as well. Abernathy will be checking with Deb Jones the City’s planning and Zoning Director for information on
comparable cities and passing the information onto Mielke as it is received. Other budget items that were discussed to go into the plan were the percentage of the General Fund that
is given to the Special Revenue Fund (parks and recreation) and also capital improvement information.
Tour Grove Park
Here is a list of amenities the Commission came up with or ideas for Grove Park: a new park sign at entrance, more picnic tables, a few grills, and possibly a temporary warming house
and observe its use to determine if a permanent building could be put in the park to be used as a warming house as well as a picnic shelter.
New Business
Abernathy reminded the Commission that the Ice Cream Social was from 6pm-8pm on Thursday, July 26th and to come out and represent the Parks Commission. There will be no meeting in
the month of August. At the present time there are no pressing items other than the comprehensive plan that is still being worked on. Therefore our next meeting will be in September.
