HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 10.8.07Minutes ______________________________ City of Falcon Heights, Park and Recreation Commission Meeting October 8, 2007 6:30PM _____________________________ Meeting Chair: Gene Ozasky Minutes By: Lisa Abernathy Present: Annie Green, Pam Harris, Eric Maronde, Tim Pittman, Paula Mielke Absent: Michael Thomas Guest: Beth Mercer-Taylor Meeting called to order 6:30 PM Approval of minutes September 10, 2007 Meeting. Motion made by Green and seconded by Maronde Staff Report Recreation Update- Abernathy reported that new sessions for Yoga and Tae Kwon do would be starting or have started already. Both seem to have a good number of participants be we will continue to market them to increase participation. Family open gym will be beginning in November. Abernathy has been working on hiring gym attendants for this program. Abernathy also reported that the program will only be held in the north gym this year due to Friendship Connection taking over the south gym. Mielke asked about us using the multipurpose room (lunch room) as an alternative. Abernathy will be looking into using that area to diminish any conflicts we may have with everyone being in one gym. Abernathy is also programming for winter/spring so will be exploring different ideas for art classes to add some variety to what has been done in the past. Mielke gave Abernathy some ideas of some local art organizations/companies to look into. Pittman updated the Commission on the updates they have been working on at Curtiss Field bush trimmings, sidewalk completion and the handicap parking space. Pittman and Abernathy also updated the Commission that we will not be putting the hockey boards up at Community Park this year due to the lack of water pressure to make quality ice and its usage number. To keep a rink on the west side of town there will be a hockey rink with boards set up at Grove Park. Mielke asked if a temporary warming shelter would be put in at Grove. Pittman said they were looking into it as they will also need to run electricity to the building and that is an additional cost. Ozasky asked about parking at the Grove. Pittman responded that while there is limited parking in that area, in order to try to provide quality ice it is the only alternative at this time than having it up at Community Park where the City has struggled to get good ice and attract people to come and use it. Continue Comprehensive Plan Work Mielke updated the Commission where they were at with content materials and what is still needed for the plan. She and Abernathy will be sitting down soon to put it all together and make finishing touches. Mielke also asked the Commission to think of ideas for the Future Planning section and asked that we do this section as a group during the November meeting. Tour Community Park Due to early darkness the Commission did not tour the park. New Business Abernathy asked the Commission to be thinking of different activities they may want to see at this year’s Winterfest (formally The Dead of Winter). With this year being the first year it would be great to have new ideas or activities for families to enjoy. Abernathy reported that we have booked the horses so those will continue at this year’s event. Harris explained that the City is now looking at Commissions having a logo of some sort that will include the City falcon logo. This may be used in publications, signs or at different events. Mielke then asked about revisiting the topic of the front yard. Next Park Commission meeting will be Monday, November 19 at City Hall at 6:30pm Adjournment Motion to adjourn was made by Mielke and seconded by Faust Minutes respectfully submitted by Lisa Abernathy.
